Question:
What to have to be prepared

I am getting ready to have lap RNY on Tuesday and want to go shopping over the weekend to get whatever food/drinks as well as anything else ya'll might think I need. I just want to make sure I am fully prepared. Thank you.    — mother2mykids (posted on November 26, 2008)

Hi Amanda, First Congrats! You have taken a big step. Also you are a beautiful girl. I would suggest a product called UNJURY if you can tolerate it. If not, use protein enriched drinks-Ensure plus usually works well. Just suggestions. Food not so much until you are able to keep the protein drinks and other stuff down. If you don't have a nutritionist I would at least ask their advice. I don't know how old you are or if you plan to have any more children but I would also consider that. And exercise is important too. Even walking a short distance is good. Good luck and God Bless, vinnigirl

Hi, I'm 3 weeks post-op and this is what I was told I could have: protein supplement shakes mixed with yogurt, milk, water. When choosing a protein supplement be sure to check the fat/sugar content. Some are too high for us. I could have low-fat creamed soups with the solid bits strained out (mixed with skim milk. Also, fat-free/sugar-free puddings and low-fat yogurt with no fruit bits. The herbal(no caffeine) teas are a very good idea because many people, including me, thought water tasted funny right after surgery. I didn't have a problem with cold/cool drinks so I also bought some crystal light individual packets and just sprinkled a bit into the glass of water. Before you do/buy anything though, you should be speaking with your surgeon's office. Did you not consult with a nutritionist? Every Dr has a slightly different eating plan for immediately after surgery and you'll want to follow those instructions to the letter.

Congratulations on your decision to have this surgery! Brandy gives you excellent advice. I really had to chuckle at reading what she recommends as it certainly brought back memories to me when I had my RNY almost 4 years ago. I'd go slow on deciding what protein drinks to purchase. Your taste buds now won't be the taste buds you have immediately following the surgery and they will continue to change. So, what to do for protein? Honey, in those first few days, who cares? You're lucky if you can get much of anything down, so just do the best you can. If you do want to purchase some protein, find a Vitamin Shoppe, where you can purchase Isopure. If it works for you, great. If it doesn't, you can take the container back and get your money back. Otherwise, if you want to brave it, you could pick up an assortment of baby foods -- the type with no food chunks. So if you get venturous, you would have some "tasty" food available. Then again, if you never open the jars, you could give them to someone who is having a baby. But, the contents may actually taste pretty good following the surgery. One question, what is a lap RNY? I know about lap bands and RNY's. I don't know what a lap RNY is. One type of item you could get when you go to Walmart is to purchase their plastic containers that have flip lids. Purchase 7 or so of them. These plastic containers are so useful to put a scoop of your protein powder in it. Then, when you are ready for your protein fix, add your 4 oz. of water, and shake, shake, shake. They cost slightly more than $1. I take 1 or more with me whenever I drive anywhere, so I can have my protein fix when I'm out and about. That way, I am never tempted to eat poor choices of food. One other product to purchase at Walmart is either Crystal Lite or their own brand which is called Great Value. Crystal Lite has 5 calories and is less expensive than anywhere else; however, their own brand (Great Value) is even cheaper, has no calories, tastes the same, and does equally a good job of staining clothes if you drip any of the liquid. But, Clorox works to get the stains out. Except, don't drip the liquid on your carpet: the stain will not come out. But, if you need clothes to dye.... At 4 years out, I still cannot drink straight water: I must add Crystal Lite or the Walmart brand to it, except I use 1 tub for 96 oz. and not what they say on the label of 64 oz. I also get Zip Fizz from Costco, so I can really get my Vitamin B-12. Oh yes, also purchase at least one if not 2 plastic containers which hold 96 oz. This you fill up each morning with your liquid for the day. Keep it with you pouring the contents into your much smaller glass. At the end of the day, the container should be empty. Doctors and nutritionists alike recommend 64 oz. so you could also purchase a couple of these 64 oz. containers at Wallmart. I use 96 oz. because my body feels better and because I exercise. My container is always with me as I drink, drink, drink, throughout the day. This method works well for me. Another purchase? I have about 16 or so of those glass Pyrex bowls which can be put in the microwave, or used in the oven. They hold 1/2 cup and make great containers to measure out what you are eating. I use them to this day to measure what I eat. My prayers are with you! Christine Gibson, MS, MA, OH Coach & WLS Support Group Leader

Please be sure to get all of your water in after surgery. My wife got severely dehydrated after her surgery in 2003. She not only got physically ill but it messed up her emotions terribly, also. Two things I liked to get my water in, was Propel fitness water and Wal-Mart brand sugar free cool aid. Propel is loaded with vitamins and the Wal-Mart brand is much cheaper than the others major brands. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Get some SUGAR-FREE fruit flavored popsicles, can't be the chocolate or anything like that. At Wal-mart there is a drink in the protein drink section called Myoplex. It has 42 gm protein so you only have to drink 1/2 at a time to help you get your protein in and believe me, now it won't look like much but after surgery you will feel full to bursting with tha much. Get Chicken broth, sugar free drink mixes. I got 3 20 oz drink jugs, fill them up in the morning so you can put them in the fridge. It'll help you keep up with your water consumption. You probably won't get it all drank to start with but try. Congrats! I'm 4 months out and it's the BEST thing I've ever done for myself.

I'm so happy for you! I am 1 and a half weeks post-op (same procedure as you) and I agree with having a heating pad. It has definetely been my best friend! Also, sugar free popsicles have gone down a little easier than liquids for me, so I recommend them!! Best of luck!
