Question:
question re energy after surgery
I have been doing the pre-op diet my doctor told me to do: 1 protein meal replacement a day, no caffeine, no carbs, no carbonation, no sugar. I am doing okay, getting plenty of protein in, but a little weak. I am wondering if after surgery I am going to be weak as well - I won't be getting near as much to eat. Those of you who have already had surgery - are you weak after the surgery? how long does it last? do you eventually get more energy? — Wendy M. (posted on August 23, 2008)

You should probably be getting 75 grams of protein each day broken down
into 25-30 gr. of protein max. per meal. I doubt you're getting enough from
foods, so I'd up the protein supplementation (shakes, etc.) per day.
Initially I had 3 per day, 25 grams each. After a few wks, I had 2 per
day, then one per day at 5-6 months. I still have 3-4 protein shakes per
week at 27 months post op from RNY. Fatigue is a common complaint from wt
loss surgery for the first few months--your body is in shock from
malnutrition and it takes a while to adjust. DAVE

I had tiredness for 3 to 4 months post op. I think it is like Dave said in
the previous reply, plus I think it's also that the body is not getting
it's "fix" from carbs and sugars, and it takes time for the body
to get used to not having the sugar/carb "high".

I don't have an answer so much as a question...ONE protein meal replacement
a day??? What do you eat the rest of the day? I'm 3 days preop for lap band
and am using ONLY liquid protein meal replacements, up to 60 grms a day.

Yes, you will be weak. I just gave into it and took a nap when I needed
it. It is only for a short period until your body adjusts. You will have
so much engery after the weight starts to come off.

Yes, you will be weak. Plan plenty of time for rest, and healing. If you
have someone to help you out a few days, take advantage of it. I went back
to work too soon, and didn't make it. I got thru the first day, but ended
up back in bed. To be honest, I have only felt like myself the last couple
of months. I am 8 months out. I got really discouraged from time to time,
thinking I wasn't going to "snap back" but I did. I feel great
now. But just take care of yourself. Your body is about to go thru some
radical changes. Give it plenty of time to adjust. Two things that will
contribute to feeling bad is dehydration, and lack of enough protein. Take
it a day at a time. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery and Good
luck!

You can get some energy from a good "liquid" vitamin / mineral
supplement like VEMMA. It has 1000 IU of Vit D3 also.

I was tired and weak for a couple of weeks. I did have LapBand along with
open hernia repair with an 8" incision. I got a little better
everyday.
I would check with your nutritionist and see if you are eating enough and
doing things correctly at this point. If I read your note correctly, you
are doing 1 protein replacement per day... what do you do eat the rest of
the day? Are you taking vitamins?
Good luck,

I actually had an INCREASE of energy after the surgery but that was
probably due to a normalization of my blood sugar levels more than anything
else. I was running consistently over 200 points WITH insulin. After the
surgery, I could get my blood sugar under control again. This was probably
what caused the increase in my energy levels. Hugh

My energy level went way up really fast...the more weight I lost the more I
literally bounced off the walls...I never experienced tiredness from
surgery...I was sore for a long long time from open RNy , and the first
month or two I was recovering but my energy increased daily...
