Question:
If I'm drinking Unjury protein shakes for two meals so I need vitamin suppliments?
I'm pre-op and I will be starting on Unjury protein shakes this Friday to help me lose some required weight for surgery. I will be drinking them as two of my meal replacements. Do I also need to start taking vitamins? If so which do you recommend? Also can anyone offer information for drinking the shakes...what to mix them with? Also any suggestions for the meal that I will be eating for dinner? — butterflygirl72 (posted on August 6, 2008)

I would say yes multi vitamin. Also I have heard people say with the 2
shakes for dinner they eat a lean cuisine dinner because it is low usually
in everything it needs to be and easy to track cause it is all on the
package. I don't have experience with it though I was on a full liquid
diet. Just what I have heard. Hope this help! GOOD LUCK! When is your
surgery?

Yes, they are needed daily after surgery, so you might as well get used to
taking them. I had issues with D vitamin on pilled vitamins, even taking
prescription vitamins. My D levels were 8, went on prescription D and only
ended up with a level of 14. Normal levels are 30-100. Began taking a
liquid vitamin, due to no malabsorption issues as there was no disgestion
issues to break down pilled vitamins. Took them for several months, and my
2 year labs showed a level of 33, finally in the low normal range. More
than half the US population is either low in D or severely deficient in D.
Recent studies show the daily dosage should be 1000-2000 of D to ward off a
host of potential health issues, that include several cancers. Optimum
levels of D are considered to be 70+. So, based on blood analysis lab
reports, I now take 3 of the 5000 IU D3 capusles daily, in an effort to
increase my D to optimum levels. I chronicle this D issue, as well as
mention which vitamins I used on my profile page. Reading the story of my
journey will offer you some further insights as to what to expect after
surgery. Protein shakes are a matter of taste. I would not buy a large
quantity of shakes prior to surgery, as your taste buds will likely change.
Vitalady offers sample packs, of one serving of several flavors you can
choose. Take these after surgery, finding one you like then, and then
ordering it online or see if it's locally available to you. I use the GNC
store to get Isopure powdered protein shakes, as I can tolerate them. Many
do not like these, so again, it's a matter of personal taste and texture to
the protein source. Some of the protein bullets or Prostat64 protein
sources do not taste good either, but many do use them. The pour in the
desired amount of protein liquid into a water bottle, fill up the bottle
with water and add a complimentary flavor of crystal lite or any other
sugar free flavoring. You might consider taking some protein supplement
prior to surgery, to make sure your as healthy as possible for your surgery
date. Dinners will vary with the time after surgery. Initially you will be
on liquids for a week or so. Then either soft foods or pureed foods for 2-3
weeks, depending on your surgeon's protocol. Daily intake of vitamins and
calcium citrate will be needed EVERY DAY after surgery, or you may suffer
from irreversible health issues. Good luck. DAVE

I liked UNJURY shakes mixed with 6-8 oz of 2% milk and 2-3 ice cubes
blended in the blender. I probably should have used skim milk but my
family wouldn't go that lean on milk. Once I added Raspberry Crystal Lite
just for a change in flavor. That was good too.
Yes to the multivitamins. Ask your pharmacist's advice.
For dinner, try 4-6 oz of lean meat with all the veggies you want. Watch
the dressings with salads. They are lethal! Try the Hellman's Salad
Spritzers. The Caesar is quite good.
Good for you! This is a great way to start taking control!!!

Definitely begin a good vitamin regimen. You will need to take vitamins
forever. (Something I personally took for granted and got myself pretty
sick with malnutrition) So...learn to like the taste of chewable/liquid
vits now...as they are the best absorbed after RNY. Calcium Citrate with
Vit D3 and magnesium (all in one chewable or powder) works best! You need
the dry capsule forms of fat soluable vitamins such as Vit A, D, E and
K...RNYers malabsorb the fat needed to carry these specific vitamins thru
your body...Therefore you must take a more refined water soluable or DRY
form of those vitamins. Vit B 12 as a sublingual or spray...and an ADULT
chewable. Keep p with your vit labs and keep an eye on the levels...You
may need to adjust your intake of certain vitamins. If you are a
menstruating woman...take two Iron pills as fumarate, amino acid chelate or
the BEST Carbonyl Iron...Iron Salts are USELESS to RNYers. They cause
severe cramping and constipation in most people and are very toxic and not
absorbed anyway...USELESS! Do not take Ferrous Sulfate in particular as
Iron is not a friendly vitamin...
As for dinner...A lean fish meal with two different veggies are a great
lean, low fat meal. You should try to make your own recipes in leaner
versions and eat as healthy as you can. Eating frozen meals and packaged
stuff is not the same as seeing exactly what goes into the meal. The
closer you eat to normal, the easier the transition in my humble opinion.
Baked chicken (no skin) is also a nice lean dense protein that keeps you
full longer and with no cravings for sugar or carbs. Drink a ton of water
between meals to stay full, until surgery...Then of course you can still do
that 30minutes to an hour before and after meals. Good luck! Hope that
helps

Try the vanilla unjury with diet hot chocolate and added 1/2 cup of skim
milk to cool it before adding the unjury. I add cinnamon and splenda for
extra sweetness. Its a really good way to get your protein in and it's a
warm, satisfying drink.

My surgeon recommended "Worldwide" Protein Shakes which are
available at Trader Joes or Vitamin Shop. 170 calories, 1-2 gms. sugar. and
they come in several different flavors. As far as the vitamins go, I
started out with Thorne Research which are specially formulated for Gastric
Bypass patients. Unfortunately I wasn't absorbing them. (which is often
the case) Add a toxic dose of Estrogen and Vitamin D and i became very ill
to say the least. I now take a Liquid Vitamin called "Passion 4
Life" which has 175 Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs and Antioxidants. One
ounce a day for the last month and my levels are back to where they should
be. Here is the website: http:passion4lifevitamins.com/charlenelewis

Best of luck to you.

G'morning...had my NUT class on July 9th...the NUT told us to start our
vitamins then...Calcium with Vitamin D (at least 600mg)...a children's
chewable vitamin or a Women's One A Day...which ever you choose it should
contain at least 18mg iron...I've been taking them ever since and I don't
even have a date yet...(my PCP also has me taking an addt'l 400 IU D of
vitamin D)...you might wanna check with your NUT as everyone seems to be so
different...

I have used the Unjury for about 6 months now. I only drink the chocolate
now mixed with 8th continent brand chocolate soy milk, I add 7 - 8 ice
cubes and blend with the bullet. They are very good. Order the sample
packs first and see what you like. I started the shakes before the required
2 weeks liquid diet and was darn sick of shakes by the time I was post op
and had to be on them. I used the Slim Fast and Atkins and the Walmart
brand of slim fast is good for before. Bariatric Advantage vitamins have a
90 day package deal that runs about $115 for everything. I tried skimping
and tried Flintstones and Centrum chewables and the Dr. fussed at me. Do
not skimp on your vitamins. Of course it will be to your advantage to
start them now and don't forget to exercise now, start walking it will help
you so much after surgery. I went back to work after 1 week with Lap RNY.
Good Luck

Yes, you need a multi vitamin. I tried several before finding passion4life
liquid - one ounce per day and it's all inclusive. My hair stopped falling
out and I feel so good on it, plus it tastes good!
