Question:
Six days post-op and my blood sugars are all over the place.
The doctor said I can't have protein the other said there is nothing he can do until my blood become stable. I dont know what to do--I' going crazy. Any thoughts ? I'm thinking what have I done to myself. What happens now? — Toby2 (posted on July 25, 2008)

is it possible for you to eat six small meals a day, i am also a diabetic,
for about 5 days after surgery my sugar was also all over the place. eat
small diabetic meals. my sugar level has continually lowered . i am five
weeks out and my diabetes is almost in remission. hang in there, sounds
like you need to worry more about your diabetes control. i think you should
get in touch with your nutristionist asap. my nerves and fear factor after
surgery were intense. relax, eat right and get in touch with your
nutristionist. god bless kat

You're not supposed to eat protein? What are you supposed to eat then?
Whale blubber? Sugar?
What was his rational for no protein?

I do not understand about the protein either? That is what will stabilize
your bs. Mine bounced around too. I am almost 4 months out and mine is
beginning to run 85-120 fasting. It will come down. Not everyone is
fortunate enough to reverse their diabetes the first week. Who told you no
protein? You need to talk with a nutritionist. Is one provided through
your bariatic program? If you need a good protein drink please try any
flavor of the Max Protein drink. I tried so many and could not tolerate any
until I found these. They are tasty made with water! I wish you good luck
while your doctors are so unsure what to do for you. You need to take
charge, speak with your doc's and become your own advocate for good
health.

Nevalle,
I don't understand the no protein thing at all. Of course you can't have
solid proteins so early post op, but liquid proteins??? What does your
nutritionist say? Did he mean no carbs? That is what effects blood sugar
more than protein.
It is very normal to wonder OMG, what have I done? I read my journal after
surgery and wrote that very question with the addition that I paid cash for
someone to make me feel that crappy!!!
It is also very normal for your blood sugars to fluctuate immensely after
surgery too. Be vigilant in checking them and making sure they don't go
too low or too high.
Contact your doctor and/or nutritionist asap to clarify the protein thing
and hang in there. Cut yourself some slack, I mean a lot of slack. If I
remember correctly, you had open RNY so no wonder you feel bad. Keep in
mind, you just survived MAJOR surgery and it took a long time to go through
the hoops to get this approved, it takes a long time to feel
"normal" again. Each day will get a little better, the weight
will start to come off, your sugars should regulate and/or get normal, your
clothes will start to fall off of you and you will start to see some
results.
Hang in there, I'm here,

Hi, My blood sugars were the same way. I'm 7wks out and there fine now.
Fasting levels today were 93. I thought I was doing bad also but the doctor
said the more I lost it would regulate. Hang in there it will get better.

I'm with everyone else...The no protein thing makes ZERO sense and I'm
thinking your doc make a mistake and meant to say "no carbs"
rather than "no protein". These things happen...please call and
confirm and ASK WHY!!!! This is another reason that doing your own research
and being your own health care advocate is rewarding when someone in the
medical field gives you bad advice. It happens! With all that said,
relax...it could be your body adjusting to the surgery. Like someone said,
some people take a little longer to become normalized. Mine took 2-3
days...Some take 2-3 weeks.
