Question:
Previously I asked about the slim fast shakes.
I am from Ontario, just met with surgeon, and he suggested before surgery to go on shake for morning, lunch and low fat dinner, I don't even have surgery date yet, but silly me not asking went and bought slim fast power and pre mixed shakes, should I take them back? Any ideas would greatly help me!! — kimmber_1 (posted on July 21, 2007)

You want to look at the calories, portien, sugars and carb intke, The thing
with the silmfast shakes is that they are full of sugar and have loads of
carbs. World Wide has 25 to 35 protiens per drink and I think around 100
calories. Go to bariatriceating.com, shipping is a bit expensive, so you
can try to fins soemone who sells it near you. Or they have a sample pack
of protien. hope that helps

I too had to go on a total liquid diet for two weeks prior to surgery. My
doctor recommended the low carb Slim Fast or Atkins low carb drinks. They
are higher in protein than the others. It will help you to shrink your
liver so that your sugery can be done laparoscopically. Worked for me.

Yep, take them back pronto! Way too high in sugars! If ya'll have GNC up
there check them out, they have a lot of good things. Make sure you get
into the habit of checking the sugars, and carbs on everything you buy from
now on-- including food later on up. Some foods are high in protein, BUT
have over 10-15 carbs which is a no-no...Good luck!

i think people are confused on what you are asking. the way i understand it
is: he wants you to do it to loose some wt before surgery and in that case
the slim fast is good and should be fine for you. now as far as after
surgery the reg slim fast has too much sugar. you can use the low carb slim
fast and it is ok after surgery, because the sugar is much much lower.
good luck, i am waiting on approval from insurance. hope this helps....

Post-surgery, I MAINTAIN my continued weight loss by drinking skim milk
every 2-3 hours (as needed) and having one small meal at lunch or dinner
(and we eat dinner quite early, at 4 or 5pm). I am totally against buying
special products because first and formost I truly believe after all of my
experience that processed foods are the main culpret for our increase in
food addictions, our incredible decline in health, and our disability to
overcome both. After I went through a bit of a painful and pitiful
withdrawl from processed foods, I found that whole foods, in a very
moderate amount, and skimmed milk have given me more energy, more weight
loss, less illness... Skim milk is the closest thing to processed food I
have in my body. I have tried it all once or twice now and I assure you, I
can see no value in pushing more chemicals into your body.
BEST WISHES!!!

Hi Kim, personally, I think Slim Fast stinks as a drink, and I wouldn't
drink them personally. I think I would want more from my surgeon before I
invest in drinking myself silly for an undetermined amount of time. I
would want to know how long I was expected to live on drinks and no food
without surgery before I commit to such a "way". It sounds like
you need more information before you decide. And I think Slim Fast is
probably one of the poor-er styles of protein suppliers. Not that you
should not watch what you eat and drink, you should, but if you have to
wait, say 6 months for surgery, I would diet and exercise, but not drink
liquids for that long. I would call my surgeon, get more information, and
then take a hard look at how I was gonna get from point A to point B. Take
care. Patricia P.

Hi Kim again, I looked at your profile. It doesn't show your BMI, but it
did show a picture. I looked because I want to encourage you not to defy
your surgeon, but to be informed. I wondered about your BMI because I
suspected that they wanted you to lose weight before surgery for "some
reason". I looks like you hold a good deal of your weight in the top
portion of your body? This is all around your liver, which can make
surgery more difficult. I am sure they want to loosen that up to some
degree prior to surgery. It makes your surgery easier, and more successful
if you do. That can be incentive, but if for some reason they didn't
inform you to why they want you to do things, they need to. This is your
body, and you need the information to make decisions. Write down your
questions and give them a call. Don't just do stuff blindly, be sure you
know what you need to know to make a commitment to something as severe as
liquid food for an undetermined amount of time. Patricia P.

It doesn't hurt to try many different drinks before surgery, just watch the
calorie, carb and sugar count. To be blunt none of them taste like a yummy
milk shake, just settle for the least offensive lol. I wouln't load up on
any one kind of drink in preparation for surgery. Your tastes can change a
lot postop as well as developing a form of lactose intolerance unique to
WLS. I really like the lowcarb slimfast during the preop fast, but it made
me really sick after surgery (think gas and diarrhea from H***! Best of
luck!

My nut 2 weeks before surgery had me on the Slimfast Optima for breakfast
and lunch. Dinner I had 4 oz. chicken or turkey or fish, with a salad with
lowfat dressing or as much green veggies until I was full. I lost 16 pounds
in that two weeks, so my surgeon scheduled my surgery. Good Luck
