Question:
I had the Roux-en-y done on Jan. 22, 2007. I have only lost 22 lbs.
My weight before surgery was 272 lbs. Is this normal to lose this small amount of weight. I have had no problems and exericse for 30 min. everyday and walk. — bsprings21 (posted on March 6, 2007)

You might want to get your thyroid checked. It can really slow down weight
loss when it is to low. RNY doesn't fix thyroid problems.

The best advice that I received from my surgeon was to stay away from the
scale. I know that it is hard in the beginning as you have been focused on
the scale in the past and are excited at seeing the weight drop off. You
have to remember that muscle weighs more than fat and if you are exercising
and taking in all of your protein, you are changing some of the fat to
muscle ratio. Focus more on how clothes are fitting. Be sure that you get
ALL of your protein in, that means a minimum of 80gm of protein in a day
and make sure that you are getting your water in. Be patient. I am
inching up on approx 80lb by scale, but clothes sizes are still dropping
even though the numbers on the scale are not dropping as fast as they were
initially. Be sure that you keep up on your exercise. Congrats on your
surgery and be patient. It didn't pack on overnight and, despite the
surgery, it is not going to come off overnight... Kari

You are doing fine, I wouldn't worry. Everyone loses at a different pace.
You are about 6 weeks out - an average of 3 lbs a week is not bad. Age,
level of activity and health problems all play into the picture. Ask your
doctor what he thinks.

I dont think thats a small amount of weight at all. It's great that you
have lost that much. When was the last time you lost that much weight in 2
months? As everyone has stated, everyone is different and some people lose
faster or more then others but in my opinion its better to lose slower then
faster so hopefully you dont have saggy skin and working out will assist in
the weight loss and minimize the droopy skin.
Good luck

Everyone loses at a different pace...hang in there...and just for your
information... Muscle does NOT weigh more than fat!!!!! That is a common
myth. Muscle is denser and takes up less space, fat is not dense and takes
up more space. Good luck!

22lbs is great! You might want to start measuring your arms, legs and
stomach and see how much inches you are loosing. I know sometimes when you
are working out you might loose more inches than pounds. I measure my
inches once a month. I do have a bad habit of weighing my self everyday.
I would say just weigh once a week. I guess I want to make sure what I
read the day before was right and i havent gain. Take care.

Sherry congratulations on your weight loss! Don't be discouraged.
Everyone is VERY DIFFERENT! You body is adjusting to the surgery and also
fighting your ability to lose. We have a stubbornly obese body who likes
it that way. We are upsetting the process of staying obese and have to
train our bodies that we are making a better decision for it. It is a
battle, for some right from the beginning. Set a program for yourself, and
be sure you are following the rules. Water, protein and exercise. No soda
or caffine. The more water the better. 22 pounds is not a bad loss.
Remember, you have a tool, not a miracle. Just use that tool every day and
get used to it as being a tool. I am 3 years out now, and read over and
over again of people who re gain at my stage. Just spoke with my doctor
yesterday about it because it sort of scares me. She reminded me that we
get lazy after the first few years and the big benefits are only the first
18 months. After that It is really up to us to diet and exercise and stick
with it. If we don't we will regain weight. Focus your thoughts on the
long haul, not on quick results. I only lost on average 1-2 pounds a week,
I walked upto 5 miles a day (began at 2 miles a day at 2 weeks post op),
drank water and worked on my protein. I am pleased with my results and am
glad I stuck to it. You do the same. Stick to it, and don't look at the
small number and be unthankful. This is 22 pounds of weight that can be
gone forever! Keep moving forward and best to you! Patricia P

I had mine done 12/26. I averaged 2-3 lbs per week for the first 5 weeks
and the started losing 1 pound per day after that and now am about five lbs
per week. It will happen. I have now lost 60.

First of all...Congratulations on your loss. Not everyone will lose weight
fast. I was a slow loser at first, so I thought. But then I came to the
realization, I'm not everyone else....I am me...I am losing at a pace that
is for my body, my health problems/issues...You can't compare your
weightloss against other peoples weightloss, because if you do, you will
get depressed. Just hang in there and things will work for you. You have an
awesome tool to work with. Follow the pouch rules, exercise, get your
protein and drink lots water/liquids and you will be a success...Good Luck
to you!!!

That is perfectly normal. Everyone is different. I lost very slowly, too.
