Question:
for BMI's 50 and up .... question
how many of you have had a BMI of 50 and up and have succeeded in a 'normal' BMI with lap rny ? ... I know everyone is different i just want to know if there are many that can actually get close to the weight they're supposed to be for their height — pixiefairy (posted on January 17, 2007)

I started with a BMI of 55. My surgeon does not do an RNY laproscopically
with a BMI of 50 or higher. There is just too much difficulty with all of
the obstructing fat.
As for 'Normal' weight, well, that is really a matter of perspective. I
think in going through all of this, my goal wasnt so much reaching a
'Normal' weight, but reaching a healthier sustainable weight for myself. I
will never be a 'Normal' weight according to the BMI scales, but I can be a
much healthier me.
Good luck,
Chris

My BMI was 53.3 before surgery (lap, rny 4-12-06) and is now 34.8. I have
gone from super obese to just obese and that is major to me. My goal is to
be a healthy me and if that only gets me to an "overweight" BMI
that is much better than where I started. I am not ruling out a normal BMI
but that was not my goal. I wish you blessings and a smooth journey. Feel
free to email me if you need a little encouragement.

Hello when I first started this process in Jan of 05 I weighed 402 pounds
with a bmi of 63. I was super morbidly obese. I lost 66 pounds on my own
before surgery in july of 05 and from July or 05 to July of 06 in a year I
went from 336 down to 172. I did everything I was supposed to do and
exercised everyday. I now weigh 165 with a bmi of 25 which is good enough
for me. The least i've ever weighed and I feel great. I do have some
extra skin which i'm sure has some weight. So i'm actually only like 6
pounds overweight but without the skin I would be less. I'm happy with
where I am right now. I hope I've helped. Jeannie

My BMI was 63 before surgery-I was super morbidly obese! Now my BMI is 25.
So I am still concidered "overweight". But by looking at me-I
do not look overweight, I have a very LARGE frame. But I can wear a size
8. I am only 1 point away from the normal BMI range. My surgeon's office
said I was fine and that BMI's are not always correct for people who have
had surgery.

You should also research the Duodenal Switch as an option to the RNY. A
study published in the October 2006 issue of The Annals of Surgery pointed
to biliopancreatic diversion with the duodenal switch (BPD/DS) as the most
effective type of surgery for morbidly obese patients (with BMI over 50).
Dr. Hess, a pioneer of the DS, did a study of 120 patients who had the DS
at least ten years earlier, shows 94% were in the satisfactory category,
having lost 50% or more of their excess weight. The average excess weight
loss at the ten year mark was 76%. Statistically the DS offers the
greatest opportunity for success (getting into a normal BMI) for the SMO
and the lowest percent of regain. Also, this surgery has been done in
Europe for over 10 years as a CURE for diabetes -- with a 98% cure rate!

I had my surgery (Lap RNY) on 8/7/06 with a BMI of 52. I've just passed my
5-month mark, and as of today I'm down exactly 90 lbs! I'm not sure
exactly what my BMI is. So my answer is - Yes! Of course you can! You
just have to consistently watch what you eat - and exercise of course. I
actually just started exercising about 3 weeks ago and it feels great!
Good luck to you! Already, I, personally can say it's the best decision
I've ever made! :)

I had a BMI of 62, and my surgeon successfully did the lap RNY! I did my
research and found a dsurgeon who had performed MANY (over 1000) of the
procedures. I am still overweight, but I can put my shoes on comfortably,
and pick stuff off the floor if I drop it. I can walk up a flight of
stairs without getting ourt of breath. I am 30 pounds from my goal weight,
and have lost 170 pounds in two years.
