Question:
i have diabetes & have kidney disease, how much more at risk?

i have end stage kidney disease am i at a much greater ristk for complications during and after surgery? does anyone have any numbers on this?or where to look. surgeon says its ok but dr. says its too risky    — kyllikki (posted on June 7, 2006)

It sounds like you are in one of those 'damned if you do/damned if you don't' places. By end stage, I assume that you are on dyalisis? And in need of a kidney transplant? And can't get one unless you have a normal BMI? Tough spot. You need to make sure that your surgeon is EXTREMELY qualified and that your hospital can continue your dialisys even through surgical recovery. Is your BMI very high? If so, you may want to consider the Duodenal Switch. Statistically, DSers lose a greater percentage of their excess weight. If you have to get your BMI normal in order to qualify for transplant, you need the very best possible tool in your corner. Good luck -- saying a little prayer for you.
