Question:
How bad is the motility test to measure esophagus muscle control?
I am really scared the scope was easy but nothing about this test sounds easy? — lynnlambert (posted on May 31, 2006)

I don't want to scare you, but I had a lot of testing done and this was the
most unpleasant of them all.
I had mine done in a hospital in Pittsburgh. The tech was a very nice lady
and made it easier on me.
I had to snort this thick gel stuff to numb my nose and then gargle and
swallow with this really nasty tasting liquid to numb my throat.
She then guided a thin tube up my right nostril. Lucky me, it was too small
so I had to get it done via the left nostril. Anyway, the tube goes up your
nostril and down the back of your throat and then into your stomach.
You are numb during this and don't gag but it still sucked lol.
Anyway, she then took pictures at certain points as she pulled the tube out
and made me sip water.
I was SO glad when it was over.
No matter how much the test sucked, I was banded on 5-18-06 and it was
worth it. I would go thruogh it again and again for this outcome :)

Hi Lynn! I was terrrifed of this test. I found that many doctors will
actually put you to sleep if you request it, but the anesthesia is not
covered by insurance. Still, it was worth the extra money ($175.00 for me),
because I was so scared of having my stomach biopsy. Fear is an amazing
thing. We build things up in our minds, and many times, it isn't half the
problem we thought it would be. I woke up without knowledge or pain of the
procedure, so I highly recommend that you inquire about whether you can be
put to sleep. There is always an answer to everything, if you discuss your
concerns and let people know what you need. Please e-mail me if you need
support, or just want to talk. I wish you the very best! Before you know
it, the tests will be over, and you will be on the losing side! Warm
smiles,

You are referring to the esophagael manometry. It really isn't that bad it
is kind of long though, but believe me it is totally worth it. I have
already had my esophagus repaired by having the Heller myotomy, that was a
blessing and I recovered in no time, now I am two weeks pre op for my RNY.
You can handle it , just relax.

Hi - Just had the test last Wednesday and the worst part of the hole
procedure was snorting that thick crap up your nose. The esophegeal
manometry only took about 20 minutes
