Question:
Eating pain and Nexium

I am 6 weeks post op and two weeks ago they found an ulcer and swelling in my pouch. I was put on nexium and feel alot better, however I noticed that I can't eat anything in the morning without first taking the nexium. Is this normal and will the pain involved with eating ever go away?    — PWEBB0716 (posted on June 12, 2003)

make sure you get an h. pylori test to determine if you have the bacteria. if you do, you will have to take a combination of usually 3 medications; antibiotics and a nexium like med. i had an ulcer for 9 months until they figured out that the original test for the bacteria was false. they tested me and found the bacteria had embedded itself at the site of anastomosis (connection). ulcers are usually caused by this bacteria. i suffered for 9 months and now am feeling good.

HI Patricia - I am 9 weeks post op and had the beginnings of an ulcer a few weeks ago. I went back on my medication (Prevacid, in my case) and things got better very quickly. My doc attacked the ulcer hard - my medication is pretty strong and I take it twice a day; once before I put anything in my mouth in the morning, and it's the last thing to go into my mouth at night (besides toothbrush!). Without it in the morning, I get nauseas. I also had a little stenosis (scar tissue + swelling) and that went away when my doctor did a "mini dilation" - he actually was able to use the EGD scope to widen the pouch opening. SO now I have no nausea and no pain as long as I am faithful with the ulcer meds. Good Luck!
