Question:
I'm always wondering what a normal days food intake is for post-ops.
I always wonder if I'm eating too much or enough.Would everyone pitch in and tell what a normal day's menu is and how far post-op you are.I think it would be helpful to see what a post-op's daily food intake is. — A L. (posted on August 2, 2000)

I am almost 10 months post-op from lap BPD/DS (Duodenal Switch) and this is
what I ate today. Coffee & McDonalds's Bacon, Egg & Cheese
Bisquit; snack Pistachio Nuts; large bowl of split pea soup w croutons;
snack Twixt candy bar; 1/3 lb shrimp with lettuce, cocktail sauce & 6-8
crackers; 3 chocolate chip cookies; pistachio nuts and diet soda. I pretty
much eat everything I did before, except 3 cookies instead of the box; 1
small candy bar instead of a pound of candy; 1 can of soda instead of a
litre. I cannot tolerate the taste of protein shakes, but have no problem
ingesting fats, so pistachio nuts are my current "protein
boosters." I take 5 hours of classes a week at the Y and have lost
130 lbs to date, which is 70% of my excess weight already.

Almost 6 yrs post-op, distal RNY. 150-180g protein supplement, made with
water, 5 or 6 drinks of 30g each. I usually have a protein bar for
breakfast, but not always. I don't LIKE breakfast. Ick. Lunch is either a
taco or part of a Happy Meal. I don't care if I get dinner, but I will eat
a part of a steak or salad, by preference. I don't snack, but will often
have another protein bar during the day sometime. Now, this is NOW. During
rapid wt loss, I ate a very small meal every 2 hours or so. My husband (5
yrs), though, gets his 5 or so proteins a day, but he'd rather have more
FOOD. In his case, though, he has to eat to not lose too much! He eats
some sort of McBreakfast, then usually has a protein bar and a small frozen
lunch, like a Lean Cuisine. He often will have another bar or two during
the day. He has a full, but normal meal for dinner. Maybe 2 pork chops,
side rice and veggie? He basically eats like a normie, but has limits! We
avoid milk & sugar, but pretty much eat everything else.

I am 7 months post-op. A day in the life is a pro-blend 55 shake with a
banana for breakfast; a sugar-free yogurt for a snack; a small mixed green
salad with vinaigrette for lunch; and 1/2 of a chicken breast and 1/2 cup
wild rice and maybe a piece of vienna bread with butter for dinner. I eat a
1/2 of a granny smith or cherries or strawberries most nights before bed.
I count calories religiously and my diet always adds up to around
1200-1400. At this rate I see a loss of 2 1/2 pounds per week these days.

Yesterday's breakfast was one piece of toast with about 2 teaspoons peanut
butter and 4 oz skim milk. For lunch I was at Red Lobster with a friend -
I ate 3/4 of the Ceasar Salad with a little dressing on the side, I ordered
the broiled Talopia (sp) 4 - 5 oz., had 1/4 c garlic mashed potatoes and
1/4 c. vegies. Supper was a grilled brat, 3/4 of the bun, 2 bites potato
salad, 6 potato chips and half a beer. (Was at a friend's house for
supper) Somedays I can't eat this much and once in a while I feel like a
bottomless pit. Open RNY 4/10 - down 66 lbs.

A normal day is: 8-10oz cottage cheese for breakfast. For lunch, a fried
chicken breast or taco salad (loaded with beef and cheese) or a cup of
chili con carne. For dinner, about 6oz of beef, a few tablespoons of green
veggie, or a very small salad. If my protein count looks low for the day,
I'll add a protein smoothie, made with yogurt or a banana. I nibble on
Jelly Belly candies throughout the day. I'm 7 months post-op with a BPD/DS
and have lost 140 pounds, over 70% of my excess weight and am only 28
pounds from goal.

I'm jealous of all of you who can eat bread and pasta without getting sick!
I am ten weeks post op RNY, open, proximal. For breakfast today I had a
Pro55 protein shake made with cold water. For lunch I had 2 tablespoons of
tuna salad with two corn chips and 1/2 apple. For dinner I had 1/2 salmon
steak (about 3 oz.) and an orange.

I've been very lucky that the only things I can't eat are sugar and high
fat foods (guess that was the point of the surgery.) The first few weeks
after my open rny were brutal. I used to be a candyholic (is there a
support group for that?) Now, 1 sugar-free popsicle quenches by sweet
tooth. Today, I had 1 serving of GNC's Designer Protein (mixed w/ water)
when I woke up. I had another one when I came back from the gym. I had a
small (6oz, maybe) serving of Velveeta light macaroni and cheese w/ tuna
and green beans in it. Had strawberries and blueberries for a snack.
Dinner was 5 snow crab legs and a few broccoli florets at Red Lobster. My
snacks used to be sugary, but now I make sure that they are either veggies
or fruit, since I can't usually fit in enough w/ the protein I have to get
in w/ meals. I also make sure to get in 90oz of liquids (water and protein
shakes) Good Luck!
