I was prone to kidney stones before my RNY surgery August 2009. I had been
taking cranberry capsule supplements (500 mg/d) ten years before surgery.
Though the medical evidence does not prove that cranberry prevents kidney
stones, I can attest to the fact that on three ocassions since my first
stone in 1996 I have grew a stone within 6 weeks after I quit taking the
cranberry supplement. The last of which was post-op RNY. During the phase
I (liquitd) & II (soft) diets of the 1st 6 weeks post-op, I could not
take the cranberry supplement since it was too large to pass thru my
swollen stoma. Well, almost 6 weeks to the day, I had that horrific pain
in my left kidney (lower left back). As a man I've been told by women who
have experienced both kidney stones and childbirth that the pain is akin to
natural childbirth. Fortunately, all of my stones have passed within 12 to
16 hours. And, they have all started the "birthing" process
between 2 and 4 am. Water intake is super important as well in helping
prevent kidney stones. Post-op bariaatric patients have a hard time
getting the minimum 64 oz/d water intake which provides the perfect
environment for a stone to form.
