Question:
I am about 8 pounds too light for surgery. Can anyone give me some tips? I
I need to weigh heavy. Anyone have any tips? — araynard29 (posted on January 11, 2010)

My Kaiser insurance permits your BMI to be a little lower than 40 if you
have some co-morbidities (i.e. high blood pressure, joint disease, diabetes
etc.). Talk to your primary care doctor about it.

One word: McDonalds.

Another word. Stop pooping. Eat foods which will clog you up at least
until after you weigh in. Stop drinking water and get dehydrated. Better
yet, don't do any of those because whether or not you have this surgery is
a function of not only weight --- which is one issue, but what your
co-morbidity issues are. It is a package deal. Has your doctor told you
that you've been denied? Oh yeah, another thing to help you weigh more:
worry, worry, worry, stress, stress, stress, stay up and don't sleep. So,
McDonalds, although having many a pizza may be better because pizza has so
much salt in it, and follow that with french-fries, no water, stop pooping
and drink the ocean -- it has lots of salt. Lordy, after such an answer, I
cannot even sign my name. Please know I am not being serious about this.
Check with your doctor and follow his/her advice.

Being so close in wieght I would imagine that this is when your
co-morbidities would come in to play. Have you actually been denied either
by your physician or by insurance? If you haven't it..this might be the
place to being. Good luck to you.

Before the weigh in, drink alot of water and put weights in your pockets.
Like penny rolls or fishing sinkers. Someone I know did this and it worked.
You only have to weigh that once for the doctor who is doing the surgery.
You don't have to maintain the extra weight until the surgery. Good Luck

Don't Eat, just carry a couple of rolls of quarters or some other extra
weight things.

I was close to having this problem as well. Fortunately I weighed a couple
pounds extra for final weigh in, but I made sure that I wasn't going to
weigh too little. Two words...ice cream!!! I hated sabotaging myself like
that, but it was that or no surgery. Haggen Daz is the tastiest with the
most fat. But before the ice cream, make sure that you haven't been
disapproved. Hope this helps!

I don't understand this posting. Your doctor told you outright that you
don's qualify because of 8 pounds??? If you were only 8 lbs under the
lowest qualifying weight don't you think that your doctor and insurance
would take into consideration time of day you weighed in and your monthly
cycle??? I find it hard to believe that you were refused for 8 pounds.
Sounds like a made up story to me. As for the change in the pockets and the
fishing weights .. Bogus as well! NOt to mention the over eating to boost
the weight.. What bad advise folks. You are weighed in the hospital pre op
as well. And>>> They doctors will tell you to try and loose what
you can before the surgery date and they put you on liquid diet so why the
farce??? I know that I will get hate mail for this honest opinion but that
is what my delete button is for.

Do you have any other health issues that might qualify you? Sleep apnea,
high blood pressure, etc? And then, as someone suggested, hit the fast
food restaurants.

I wouldn't gain weight just to get the surgery. But if you aren't 100 lbs
overweight to qualify you for the surgery, then perhaps you have life
threatening conditions. LIke GERD, Diabetes, Sleep Apnea, High Cholsterol,
those will help with you case. If you don't have it, but it
"runs" in your family" won't qualify you. I was 90 lb
overweight but I had a lot the comorbidities. Don't gain weight in hopes
of getting the surgery, you may not get the surgery, then here you are
8-10-20 lbs heavier, and now it is twice as hard to take off the weight.
Look into the criteria first. Can you give us a little more to go off of
in order to help you better?

ok first of all for the person who said they thought I was lieing. I went
through all my pre op's and months more of doctor visit's telling me I
would get approved and then my insurance denied me for 8 pounds too light.
I am going to appeal this next week. I now have high blood pressure and
gurd doesn't count with my insurance. Hope this clears it up.

Ok, so for as far as Pam's comment...no I wont send you hate mail but I
will tell you that yes, the insurance company does deny if you arent 40 BMI
or 35 with 2 other co-morbity issues (no exceptions). Been there done
that! So to come on here saying someone is lieing when it is a situation
you arent sure about is just wrong! Also, like I said...been there done
that...I drank almost a gallon of water while in the doctors parking lot
before my appointment. I wore the heaviest clothes I could find including
heavy shoes and I had all my pockets full of change. I never thought about
the leg weights until I read it on an OH post. It is this weight (when you
1st go for your surgeon consult) that the insurance takes into affect for
approval. You are already approved by the time the doctor puts you on your
pre-op diet so why would that matter? I dont mind people putting in their
2 cents about stuff even if they disagree but I sure wish they wouldnt be
so rude about it. Good luck and I hope you get your approval soon!!!!
