Question:
what can I do to stop acid relux

I'am almost two years out of WLS. For the past 6 mos I suffer with acid reflux and nothing helps. My doctor put me on Omperazole and I take this medication like candy yet no relief. I'm starting to regret my weight loss surgery and this illness makes me very depress. Oh by the way I had the sleeve done    — latonya27 (posted on December 12, 2009)

Has your Dr prescibed you NEXIUM?My Dr gave it to me to take 3 months after surgery to help with healing. Please ask your Dr for this if not already. If you take it everyday it will help.Other than that Tums will help at the moment. It has the extra calcium we need also..lol..best wishes to you.

Carolyn, Tums may help with acid relief but they don't help people who have had RNY get the extra calcium they need. RNYers can ONLY benefit from Calcium Citrate. Tums are Calcium Carbonate.

Latonya, do not take acid reflux lightly. I had a terrible case of it after RNY. I was asperating the reflux into my lungs plus it can lead to esophagel cancer. I was given Nexium and told not to eat 3-4 hours before going to bed. This seems to work for me. If I do eat too close to bedtime I will have that horrible acid reflux. Good luck.

Try to see if you have the acid reflux when you eat diary products right before bed or if it is anything you eat before bed. But try to avoid anything at least 1 hour before bedtime. My husband has problems with the diary/acid reflux and not so much with food. I don't know why, perhaps it has something to do with lactose intolerance. Check with your doctor to make sure nothing else is going on.
