Yes, this has happened/is happening to me. I am 10 months out. I am on
the pill for endometriosis. I am still trying to pick an alternate form of
birth control. I have pretty much been spotting ever since surgery. The
pill is no longer metabolized the way it was before. Yes, if you were just
taking the pill you could get pregnant, so smart thinking. My doctors say
this is pretty common. I just have not decided what method to choose -
which one has the fewer side issues for folks like us. The patch can cause
bone loss, don't need that. The shot can have higher risk of blood clots,
don't need that. The two methods they cave me to choose from would be
either inserted in my arm and last 3 or 5 years (I forget) or Miridea,
which is inserted vaginally. I am not too keen on either one to be honest.
So, so far I am still taking my pill once a day to keep the bleeding down
to a minimum and trying to figure it out. I realize my response offers no
solution, however, some times it is just nice to know you are not alone!!
=]
Good luck.

My period used to be so predictable...I got it on the full moon for YEARS!
Never fail! Now I get it every 3 weeks and it is so heavy days 1-4 and
lasts 3 extra days. BE CAREFUL and watch your iron levels! I became quite
anemic and was not taking iron religiously! Don;t allow yourself to get low
on iron as it is sooooo hard and sooooo slow to bring that back up with
supplementation alone! I swear by Carbonyl iron for RNYers...It is a safe,
non toxic elemental iron that even children can take...I took high doses to
get my iron and ferritin levels back up...I would work on taking that iron
all month and as soon as I got my period, it was gone...So start iron NOW!
I promise you do not want to take ferrous sulfate...stay away from that
stuff, as it is not absorbed well by the RNY anatomy...Even Bariatric
Advantage recently changed over it's iron formula to Carbonyl Iron. I use
Vitalady's Tender Iron and just love it. It's sweetened so it's chewable
and has no metal flavor...It's relatively cheap...I also have found a
similar (not chewable, although I do chew it with chewable Vitamin C) Is
easily found in the store as "Perfect Iron" by Sundown...With
these heavy cycles I recommend you get your ferritin and iron levels
checked NOW and again in 6 mos to be sure you are not dropping...anemia has
awful side effects...by the time my iron was 4...I felt pretty much
lifeless and half frozen...Watch that closely! Also...I hear "I
mal-absorbed my pill and I am pregnant" more times than I can count on
both hands! Watch that too! LOL

Yes my daughter and i had WLS on 12/12/09 she has just gotten over her
period 4 days before surgery. But within 3 days home she got it again for
11 days. I asked the same ? and found out it was from the blood thinners
they give you in the hospital. So your period is normal. I dont know
about the nueva ring, But i do know most women can become more fertile
after the surgery, because of the wt loss. So be careful. I say even
though you are using the ring, or pill make him cover up too. Just to be
very safe, ;)

Hi! I'm like the others..I had a different period before surgery. Before I
was very irregualr(all my life) and then I was in peri-menopause, once I
lost about 50 lbs I noticed they were coming more regularly and seemed very
much like they were when I was a teenager, crampy, clotty etc,(sorry) I was
told that when we lose weight the hormones stored in our fat are released
and we have an explosion of estrogen surging thru us making us more fertile
etc. I don't know how long it lasts or if it gets better with time, but I
do know my pre surgery monthly's were 4 short days and now they last
anywhere from 6-8 and are heavy and awful, but I still am glad I had the
surgery. I feel better in every other respect. You mentioned the ring and
the pill..you are on only one right? can you safely be on both? Good luck
to you and God Bless! Hugs, Kim

I started the Nuva Ring a month before my surgery which also was on 2/9/09.
I basically bled the entire month through, but not as heavy as you're
describing, until I put the 2nd ring in and they told me it was normal.
After I put in the second ring I didn't have any more bleeding like that.
It took my body awhile to get used to the ring. With the surgery on top of
it, your body is probably just trying to get adjusted.

Well, my answer is two-fold. First, I would imagine because of the weight
loss your body will experience changes in your period. You know because of
the hormones. I am not a RN or a doctor but just going on what my gyne has
said in the past. Also, with the Nuva Ring, the change in BC can cause
unpredictable periods for the 1st several months. I had the Nuva Ring and I
experienced changes in my cycle. Sometimes I go it and other times I
didn't. So be sure to change the ring when you are supposed to. I would
suggest that you don't worry. Our bodies are very complexed and anything
change could send our hormones into HIGH GEAR! So, keep your dr. appt and
Good luck with everything.

Yes! it happens to almost everyone. Even us old girls who were happily on
our way to menopause. You body has been storing estrogen in you fat cells
for a number of years. Now, with the fat being released, so is the excess
estrogen. You'll probably have some very heavy/extra long periods for
awhile or, as the others have mentioned, it might come more frequently.
Good call on the extra protection!

Yes, this happened to me too. Probably a good idea to have the dr do blood
work just be sure you haven't become anemic. Hope the ring I hope that
works for you. I tried it before surgery but wasn't able to tolerate it
but I can't take birth control pills either because I stay nauseated.
