Question:
I had surgery on1/5 and im still in the hospital!!!
ok. i had open gastric bypass on monday. i have been fine with keep liquids down and no nausea at all. so, i am having a little problems with urinating. i can go on my own, but it takes me a while and its very concentrated. i know the doctor said i was slightly dehydrated, but am getting better. how long does it take to get your bladder working back to normal. i had the cathater in me from monday till tuesday afternoon. they have me a supposatory this morning to help me go poop and with gas. i haven had any problem with gas, so of course when i did the supposatroy it was HORRIBLE!! severe cramps, soi need to know that it does get better. i dont regret my decision to have the surgery , but itseems like im getting there. — jackie L. The gas does get better... walk and move around as much as you are able,
it makes it go away faster. Also, gasx chewables or strips. I had lap RNY
and I was in for 6 days so I understand how you are feeling.....
frusterated. It does get better!

It gets better! Be patient. It will take a week or two for the gas to
pass, depending on how active you are during your recovery. The more
active you are, the less time it will take for the gas to pass. As far as
the constipation, dehydration is a big part of that. Drink as much fluid
as you can. Keep water with you at ALL TIMES! Carry a bottle with you if
you can. Sip water all day to stay hydrated. It is about the ONLY way to
keep yourself hydrated after weight loss surgery. You CAN'T drink large
amounts of fluids like you used to before the surgery. As long as you do
this, you should be fine. Good luck on your weight loss journey! Hugh

Yep...Open RNY is a lot tougher than Lap RNY...No doubt! I was in the
hospital 4 days myself...and I remember asking myself several
times..."What the HELLO did I do to myself?"...Yes...It gets
better. But with open RNY the pain takes quite a long time to go away, they
cut right through your stomach muscles!...It took longer than I thought it
would take. The severe pain does fade daily...And is mild by 6 months...but
I had some pain for up to a year...Yep...HOWEVER...It was very mild and the
pain from arthritis in my knees was completely gone in just a few months as
I lost my weight and no GERD and no diabetes...The trade off was okay by
me! Plus I lost so fast and so much and had a ton of energy...I like my
little 4 inch scar as my little battle wound...(battle with MO) I won!
YES...It gets better...take it day at a time...WALK as much as you
can...That helps with the gas...the healing...the weight loss! I can
barely remember it now...I swear, looking back it went so fast! Enjoy the
journey...It might seem slow now...but you are well on your way...and the
gas..oh...yep...expect more of that! Sorry! LOL I hope they gave you a
binder to wear! I wore it faithfully for over a year! It helps with pain
too...Keeps everything nice and tight and prepares you for coughs, sneezes
and sudden outbursts of laughter! LOL If not...GO GET ONE as soon as you
can! It's just a big elastic wrap with velcro closure...Here's one that
they gave me...(Only you wear it much higher than shown in the
photo!)http://www.contourmd.com/Female_Waist_Binder_12in_Width_by_Contour_p/412fp.htm

about the bladder....i was in the hospital four days (lap gastric
bypass)...and the whole time i was in the hospital I would have to turn the
water on at the bathroom sink...to help me go! I had to really think about
it! LOL....but i was that way with both my c sections too...by day 5 it got
better...if you havent tried running water, do so! it really helped me!

Many years ago when I had my baby, they told me to take a cup of warm water
and pour it on myself with the faucet running and that was a tremendous
help too. Good luck on your journey!

Hang in there, sometimes it does take a while for things to wake back up
and get back to normal working condition. I know you are miserable, but
things could certainly be much worse. Keep walking and sipping and work
out the gas bubbles and you will get a little bit better every day. Did
they check your urine for an infection? Have you had any antibiotics?
Best of luck and welcome to the loser's bench- try to focus on the
positive, you are on the other side of surgery now and will be quickly on
your way to health and wellness. Way to go.

Relax. You will be fine. Try drinking more water for hydration.
Something to keep in mind for later, no carbonation. It really does mess
with you. The gas does get better. The water will also help your kidneys
function properly and therefore you will urinate better. Let us know how
its going. Good Luck and God Bless,

I also had trouble urinating after surgery. I was in the hospital for 5
days and I had lap RNY. I was told for open procedure you might be in for 7
days aprox. You just had major surgery. Give your body time to heal. It
does take a while but in the end it is so worth it. Good luck.

HI Jackie. Congratulations on the surgery! Sounds like you are doing fine.
The urinating thing will fix itself. It may take longer, but it will get
there. The gas thing...I had my husband drive me around for 1 1/2 hours and
the bumpy ride helped the gas. lol It took about 45 mins to get things
moving, but it got there. And boy did I feel better. Give yourself a good
2-3 weeks to get things feeling normal. Congrats again! and Good luck!
