Question:
Can someone recommend some iron supplements?
I am supposed to stick to liquid or chewables, but the liquid iron we found gives me such a horrible headache that I can't stand it. I haven't been able to find anything other than the regular pills, but I'm not sure if it would be ok to crush them-- or if they would have the same effect. Any suggestions or links will be greatly appreciated! — snickersblk (posted on November 4, 2008)

Hi Nik, My doctor write me out a script for a prenatal plus w/ iron pill.
It works for me and my levels are now normal. I was having the same problem
and had problems w/ constipation as well.

I was also having a bad time with iron and stopped taking it because the
side effects were really bad for me....At that time...I didn't know there
were different types of iron...or that the ones that have these horrible
side effects are highly toxic and not absorbable for most people and
especially RNYers! I became anemic and was quite sick there for several
months! My own doc didn't realise she too gave me the worst iron for my RNY
system which cannot absorb Iron salts or Ferrous sulfate...This is the Iron
that they give "by the book"...The BOOK is outdated! So many
docs don't know yet that there is a BETTER, non toxic, highly absorbable,
chewable iron out there! Many companies are just now switching to it and
even the FDA will probably start enriching our food with it rather than
ferrous sulfate as they have for years...It's not working and many children
die from Iron salt poisoning yearly! I got rid of mmy anemia completely in
6 months...with improvement in only 2 mos! So I KNOW this stuff works and
with no fear of toxicity even in high doses. No side effects and it
worked!!!!! Tender Iron or by it's specific name "Carbonyl
Iron"...Bariatric advantage recently switched to this formula as well
as many vit co's too! It's only just beginning to get the recognition it
deserves...but it is fairly easy to find! I get mine from Vitalady.com...I
love hers because they are chewable and when taken with a Vit C (as highly
recommended for best absorption) they taste like sweet tarts! No metal or
blood taste. A big bottle of 400 is only 16 bucks. I am no longer anemic
because of these iron...I was taking 13 daily! YES...13! I take 8 a day
now and my iron is great as well as my low blood counts going back to
normal too! I knew they were working when after two weeks my hands and
feet got warm again and I felt an overall well being and less tired! I had
no idea how bad I actually was until I began this iron and felt better!
Get some! CARBONYL Iron! Get some!

You can check out celebratevitamins.com for chewable iron w/ vitamin c.
They come in 30mg grape and 18 mg tangerine. Both of which I think are
excellent. I have yet to become sick from them, they have no nasty after
taste and they're not gritty. They're also very reasonably priced. If you
email them at [email protected] they will send you a free
sample. You won't even have to pay for shipping. Well worth a try in my
opinion.
Best of luck to you!

My doctor prescribes Chromagen Forte which contains iron, folic acid and
the B vits we need all in one. I take just one a day and haven't had any
problems with it. Plus, my insurance pays for part of it since it's by
prescription.

Thank you all for posts and messages! Hadn't heard of most of the things
mentioned, so I'm off to do some shopping. :)

They taste pretty good.
