Question:
RNY bypass

is gastric bypass surgery reversible? for the gastric bypass does the surgeon cut the stomach then staple the new pouch apart from the original stomach? or do they just divide the new pouch from the stomach bystapling apart? no cuts or anything major? thanks.    — halahmad (posted on September 15, 2008)

I believe it is reversible b/c part of the stomach is stapled off to form a pouch. However with the DS, part of the stomach is actually removed & discarded.

My surgeon said that gastric bypass was reversible. He said it was VERY complicated, but reversible. It's my understanding that a tiny pouch is stapled off from the stomach but the entire stomach is not removed. Therefore, making it reversible.

Ask you Dr. I am sure the actual by-pass like I had is not reversible. I wouldn't want to reverse it either. I know you can gain all your weight back even with the full gastric b/p. you can re-stretch your pouch.

You just had your surgery; you're just going through an adjustment period and recovery, just hang in there, it WILL get easier. Find a support group in your area to attend, that will help a lot.

every surgery seems to be different. Mine says YES it is reversible, he has had to reverse I believe 2 of them in his 23 years, and over 5000 surgeries. Please DO NOT have this surgery with the intention of getting it reversed.....not a good idea.

If you had a Roux-en-Y, the stomach has three lines of staples and is cut and separated and the pouch formed by the top part. It is not one piece stapled off. The Vertical sleeve is formed by stapling a long sleeve and most of the stomach is separated, but not cut apart. The mini gastric bypass does this also I believe, and there is a new procedure which goes in through the mouth and forms a pouch by stapling the top part of the stomach and it empties into the rest of the stomach.
