Question:
I am almost 3 weeks post op and have had week long plateau!!
argh!! So I had RNY on 5/20/08 and in total have lost 38 pounds (pre op and post) since surgery have lost 21 lbs. I have looked at the same number for probably over a week. It goes down 2 up 1 and down 2 again, or just stays the same! it's driving me insane! I am fine with my weight loss, I just want to know if this is normal so early. I am drinking my protein, taking my vitamins, and could be walking more. Any ideas or suggestions? — stefanie_matthews (posted on June 5, 2008)

Just keep on following the program...get as much exercise as you can. Your
body is adjusting to major changes and it's normal for weight to flucuate
and plateaus are also normal. Try to look at the bigger picture, not day
to day.
This is the hardest time for u, it will get better. For me it seemed like
for the first 6 weeks or so, time stood still. Now I'm almost 5 months
out...I've lost 70 pounds.

The nice thing is your will lose again. I have had plateaus list three
week, but after just 6 months I am down over 100 Lbs. I use to freek out
when it happened, but it is not like when we dieted and finally gave up and
put the weight back on plus. You will keep losing, sooner or later. The
way to do it is to shock your system. Here are a few things that worked
for me. I increased excersize for three day to twice what I was doing, or
about two hours a day, and then layed off for two day and when back to what
I did every day. One time, I went and ate white rice, and patatoes, just
for one day, and then back on my diet, but the thing that worked best was
drinking 150 oz of water for two days and then back to my regular 100 oz.
That seems to get you passing the fluid and you system gives in and starts
losing. The other thing to do is just stay at what you should be doing,
and wait it out. It is not like you will not start to lose. Your body
thinks you are starving it. Keep up the good work and just keep looking at
the clothes that you plan on wearing in three months. It makes the time go
faster.

I had mine on 5/14. I am at the same point as you - no loss, up and down
1-2 lbs. I read in many posts that that is normal. And I only lost 15 lbs
since surgery. (33 total).
So I guess it is normal. i also take my protein, drink water and ...
nothing. Wish you luck!

You are doing WONDERFUL! It's not good to lose too fast and your body
knows this. You already lost 38 and then another 21...It's been a little
over 2 weeks (16 days). That's 1.3 lbs a day!!! Give yourself a hug and a
year's time...It takes a good year before you fully understand how fast you
really are losing. Hugs

I had my surgery on 5/21 and I am going through the same thing. No weight
loss in 5 days. But I am tryng to look at the big picture, I get my protein
and fluids in and I am walking about one mile a day it takes me 30 minutes.
So we are doing what we should be doing. But I feel like you do frustrated
because I was lossing each day until 5 days ago. I have lost 15 pounds
since surgery, but I am also losing inches because I am getting into
smaller clothes. So I guess we just hang in there the ride will get
betterr!!!

I am 3 months out and went through this same thing around the same
time.....make sure you are getting in your protein and water. Also, if you
haven't done it already, take your measurements......I bet you will see a
difference! At 3 weeks out I had lost 21 lbs, but when I compared my
measurements to the night before surgery.....I had lost a total of 35
inches! Granted I measured alot of places on my body, but I had def.
dropped inches in the important places(chest, waist, hips) and I mean 2-3
inches in each spot. From what I gather this is the body's way of playing
catch up and is completely normal...although frustrating. Just keep up with
your program and you will start to move again, but know that stalls or
plateaus are normal. Take care!

The best suggestion I have for you is to STAY OFF THE SCALES. It fluxuates
and bothers us when it goes the wrong way. I only get on once a week and
by then, it usuallly goes down. And you are not stewing about it, often
eating out of frustration. Give it a try. Blessings, Lyn

Stay away from the scale. If you are only 3 weeks out, your body is going
through tremendous changes and adjustments. The scale will register all of
these changes and that can be discouraging. Have a regular weigh-in day.
I honestly stepped on the scale once a month after surgery and that was in
the doctors office only. This helped me to keep my eye on the prize and
not allow the scale to detour my journey. Good luck.

Yes, it is perfectly normal (although frustrating). Try to weigh yourself
just once a week - at the same time/same day. Instead of focusing on the
number, focus on how you are doing - changing your eating, measurements are
going down, feeling better, etc. You may want to start journaling when you
have your Wow/Ah-ha moments. Refer back to that when you feel you aren't
making progress.
