Question:
Did I Dump and if so, why?
I am 13 days post op RNY. things have been going good, today I got up, chewed my multivitamin, drank my protein shank (4 oz skim milk, 1 scoop vanilla powder). AFter about 10 mins of finishing it I became hot/clamy, nauseous, a little dizzy and couldn't really hold my head up. I felt aweful. I began to drink sips of water and just sat there with my eyes clothes. AFter about 15 or so mins it passed. WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT? never felt it before and have done nothing different today than I've done since getting home frmo the hospital. I have my 2 week appt tomorrow; so will bring it up; but interested to see what my OH family has experienced. — hatda (posted on February 12, 2008)

Yes it sounds like dumping. remeber milk has sugar in it. and I dont know
if the protein powder has sugar in it. Some days it may not bother you and
other days it may bother you. When I get dumping I feel nauseas and I feel
tired and I have to lay down for about 1/2 hr to 45 minutes. I wouldnt even
drink the water. Welcome to the world of dumping

Sounds similar to dumping to me. That's how I feel when I drink skim milk.
If you've never had it happen before with milk, then it's hard to say why
you'd have it happen now, but I know if I drink even as little as 4 oz. of
skim milk in a shake, or the Carnation Instant breakfast, or even with a
small amount of rice krispy cereal, I feel like I need to lie down and it
passes in about 30 minutes to an hour. I get hot, clammy, as you
described, and light headed. I feel like I have a severe case of the flu
that comes on very suddenly. It's a horrible feeling. Check the amount of
carbs or sugar that your protein shake mix has in it, as that might be the
culprit, or find a protein shake that mixes with water rather than milk, or
use soy milk. That helped me. Good luck! Hugs....Cheryl

I agree, what you describe is my symptoms of a sugar dump. Minor sugar
gives me what you described. Lots of sugar is that plus horriable bowel
cramps. Check your multi-vit. I have to do the sugar free chewable. Can not
do regular with out a dump.

Check your vitamin for sugar content. If it's not on the label, contact
the manufacturer. 4 oz of skim milk (you're using skim right?) has about 6
gms of sugar. I don't know what your protein mix has in it, but it sounds
like you "sugared" yourself. Body Fortress Chocolate only has
1.5 gm of sugar per scoop and you can get it at Walmart. If you go over 10
gms or so of sugar per serving, you're at risk for dumping. This good
information for you to have about yourself. Now you know to be careful.
Hope you're feeling better.

It was a close call to dumping...Either you drank your protein too fast,
the vitamin didn't sit well today... or like so many others, you are
becoming lactose intolerant meaning like me, you might have to give up milk
and try soy or lactose free milk if it continues. I can't drink milk
shortly after WLS, but can eat all other forms of dairy with little
trouble. Lactose pills help too if you want to continue drinking milk and
eating dairy and still have this problem...If you dump your food out one
end or the other that is when you know for sure that you're dumping. The
feeling might just have been an off day. We all have those from time to
time. Don't let it get chronic...If it continues talk to your doc!
Good luck

Sound like a minor case of dumping. You need to read all labels of items
you ingest. I mix my protein shake with water, and use one that has a
maximum of 2 grams of sugar per 25 grams of protein. It also may have been
the vitamin. Some chewables have sugar in them too. The shake, the milk,
and the vitamin combo may have given you a minor case of dumping. Check
the labels on your vitamins and protein powder. Some people react to sugar
very easily, yet others have little problems with it. DAVE

Yup, Most likely it was dumping episode. Try mixing your protien powder
with plain cold water & Ice,skip the milk. The
milk is not needed & will added sugar & calories you do not
need.

Yep, I would tend to agree with the rest of them--it was probably dumping.
And as another poster said try WATER mixed with your protein powder. Most
can tolerate that much better. Good luck, God bless and welcome to the
losing side!

Dumping usually last 45 minutes to 1 hour, so it may have been a minor case
of it. If you had RNY WLS then the first third of you small intestine does
not process food any longer, and that is what use to handle the sugar and
fat. Now, when you have too much sugar or fat, while it is passing through
the remaineder of your small intestine you have the feeling like you
described, but for a longer period. As sugggested earlier, check what you
ate for sugar content. That is what can trigger it. Skim Milk does not
have fat to cause it, but you might also have a problem with milk now. Try
your shake with water tomorrow and check you vit. and minerals for sugar by
reading the labels.

The nutritionist at my surgeon's office did warn us that protein drinks
when drank first thing in the morning might not sit well, he recommended
another form of nutrition in the morning and waiting for protein drinks
until mid-morning. It's just an added thought!

My doctor told me that if I mix the protein with milk, only drink one drink
every five minutes to prevent dumping. Good luck with your weight loss.

I think more than likely you ate too fast or too much. Some times foods
with high sugar or fat contents will cause this "wave" of
sweating and nausea. I remember it well..... It will get better with time.
Like so many others also suggested it could be triggered by milk. I use soy
milk for everything, I prefer it over milk. Drinking milk always gave me an
upset stomach, some ice creams (in my past) also triggered the upset
stomach as well. Protein mixes are "whey" products, from milk. I
can tolerate the protein mixes, but I do mix with either soy milk or water.
Good luck to you, and believe me, alot of this will pass.

To me it sounds like you should have dumped, but you did not. I still get
that sometimes. Maybe your body is not liking the powder now or just not
tolerated the milk. If it happens again I would definetly change
something. Try it with water as well maybe.

You might be lactose intolerant. I became lactose intolerant to milk after
my surgery. However, I have no problems with other dairy products. Try
mixing your protein powder with water or if you want to use milk...try
using the lactaid milk. GOOD LUCK !!

YUP! That's the dumping syndrome alright. Dumping is often accompanied by
"throwing up" but that does not have to be the case. Everyone is
different but I do not recommend drinking anything while or immediately
before or after eating as this could enhance the conditions that bring on
the dumping syndrome. Sometimes when I feel the symptoms you have described
but am not throwing up, I will induce vomiting. That very uneasy 'dumping'
feeling usually subsides soon afterward.

I am not sure what your physician suggests, but if you want to look at
things that have a high rate of aborbability, let me know. I know that
tends to be an issue and you want nutrients absorbing for optimal health.
I am an RN and Nutritional Health Coach, so feel free to email me at
