Question:
5 years post op and not only nauseated

HELP! I'm 5 years post op and I am not only nauseated all day everyday but I vomit all day long. I vomit whether I eat or don't eat. Often times it will be saliva from sucking on a peppermint (sugar-free) or a sip of water. It's been going on for about 5 weeks now and I'm down 40 more pounds. When I was a fresh post op I had several strictures, but that's not the issue right now. I really don't know what the issue is, but like many others are I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. I really want to eat and thus have the energy. If anyone has an idea or suggestion I'd be happy to try anything.    — EmtEeyore (posted on January 22, 2008)

For God's sake, please get to a doctor. This symptom should not be present some 5 years post op. You may have an ulcer causing problems or other health issues that require your doctor's card. If I'd lost 40 pounds quickly 5 years out, vomited all day long for 5 weeks, I'd be calling my doctor. It's better to get to the doctor now, instead of having an ambulance bring you in when your health is in worse shape. This board is for advice, and not to diagnose what appears to be a BIG problem. Get some professional help.

I totally agree with Dave....Get to the doctor post haste! You not only have something going on, but having secondary problems no doubt, with dehydration and getting weaker! Take care!

I guess I haven't made it clear that I have been to the doctor they did the EGD to make sure I didn't have a stricture. I also had a CT scan to make sure I didn't have a hernia. That's why I asked if anyone had a suggestion from you all.

I'd contact the surgeon that did the surgery first and foremost as your pcp/regular doc isn't going to know what all to check. You might want to try gas X for the nausea. That helped me immensely in the few months after surgery and helps me now when I get nauseated about once a month. There is also a possibility of acid reflux etc. Too many things to name but please check with the surgeon that performed the surgery! Good luck and God bless!

Hi Rachel, thanks for writing. Rachel, I am 4 years post op (in March), and if I had your symptoms, I would run, not walk to my surgeons office and get checked out. My fear with you, is that this is not a wls issue at all, but another health issue. Losing 40 pounds in 5 weeks at 5 years out, you need to be seen, now! Follow up with your surgeon, and also call your regular doctor and get a full physical and check up. You have a real medical issue that needs attention. It may be simple like an ulcer that has gone bad, but it could be a serious health issue. You need a full check up. I had ulcer issues since about 6 weeks post op (I took medication that kept it under control), and last March (3 years out) they removed scar tissue from my gastric bypass area, and had to sever my stomach from my bowel (they had fused together). They didn't do this to fix an ulcer, but after healing up, it did fix the ulcer. You could have scar tissue problems, possible twisted bowel issues, or something non-related that needs treatment. I hope you have already made your appointments, and please let me know how things work out for you. Take care, Patricia P.

Do you have your gallbladder!!!!!!!! I have a friend who had the same problems. If you do it may need to be removed. I know that when she had her problem she was so sick that she lost 100 lbs in less than 8 months and she was not a WLS patient. I took her Dr that long to figure it out.

Gastroparesis is a digestive problem where the stomach empties slowly or not at all. Your pouch/stomach is supposed to grind stuff up and push it into your intestines to be absorbed. When this doesn't happen, food and liquid sit in the stomach causing nausea/vomitting and a whole host of other symptoms. You can find a list of symptoms by googling "gastroparesis symptoms." If this sounds like you, you may want to ask your doctor to order a "Gastric Emptying Test" or a "Gastric Emptying Study." You eat an egg, oatmeal, or hamburger patty mixed with a radioactive marker and they take pictures of your stomach at certain intervals Good luck to you.

go to web md and put in your symptoms. If you are having extreme pain in the middle of your back that feels like some one stabbed you and is turning the knife, run don't walk to your ER & have them check your gall bladder. I had the exact same symptoms and for 2 months went in and out the hospital and er's with no one wanting to find out what was wrong, I did a web md,search just looking for some suggestions and bam!!!!there was every symptom I was having under gall bladder. I typed in inability to digest food. Good luck. we have to be pro-active in our care as WLS patients, becasue alot of doctors don't keep up or know the issues that we face as WLS patients and alot of the time, it is just easier to blame the surgery than to really look for the reason for our illness.

Hey rachel. If you still have your gull bladder this could be it. However dont let them do a ultrasound to determine this. I had 2 of them and they were fine. Finally I had a hydrascan (spelling might be off) They determined it was my gull bladder. It measures your Gull Bladder Function and mine was 17% very low. I also sent my mother for this exact test and hers showed the same results. So if you still have a gull bladder ask for this test. Good Luck )

My sister had the lap band last May and has nothing but complications starting three days after surgery. She's 28 and has only lost 40+pounds.They are about ready to remove it soon because they can't figure out the problem. I like to search these sites trying to find an answer. Although Rachels problem isn't exactly the same as my sisters it did have some similarity, the nausea and vomiting. Here's her problem, I think? When she eats her food feels as though it is stuck then shortly later she either feels sick to her stomach or vomits. When they remove some of the fluid she seems to feel a little better, but the problem doesn't go away. They have done an upper GI and a Endoscopy(sp). Everyone says it's the chewing of her food but she swears it's not the problem. I thought the Gall bladder idea fit her, but she just told me she didn't have the same symptons now that the fluid has been removed. Any ideas on what the problem might be. I'll probably post this question again on the main question page because I really want to help her. Thanks
