Question:
Am I the only one to have a really bad taste in my mouth post-op?

Every night I brush my teeth before bed and wake up with a metallic taste in my mouth. Also all day my mouth tastes funky. My water tastes funny to me .    — nacrosby (posted on June 22, 2007)

You are not alone, as my doctor explained to me it is the stored fat your body is burning because your are not eating any, try a hard candy(surgarfree) sometines I would use a mint, but some times a fruit candy worked better.

I am nearly 4 weeks post-op and i have the same problem. The nurse said it was from the prevacid and soon as I stop using it, it should stop. Someone else said it was the gases in your stomach. I usually take a sugarless mint. It has gotten much better from when I first had the surgery.

Hello Nancy! I was having the same problem. I had 2 capsules I had to open and put in my mouth to take. Instead of putting it directly in my mouth, I mix it w/ Crystal Lite and that has helped a lot for me. It may help you also. It is worth a try. Hope it helps! Good luck on your weight loss!

You probably have REALLY bad breathe. Smile it ketosis and means your losing well eventually it will go away. I drank really strong sugar free grape kool aid during that time, because water tasted so foul. Its normal so relax and enjoy the ride. Fast loss was so much fun, I will be 6 years out this july. time sure flies.

On No Nancy, you are not alone. You have to remember that you have staples in your stomach now, and that can cause exactly what you have. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen many times. Keep brushing your teeth. I am 3 plus years post op, and when I wake up in the night to use the bathroom (I am 46 and do this all the time), I usually brush my teeth because of film and yucky feeling in my mouth. I go to bed refreshed, and do it again in the morning. The metalic taste should decrease as you heal, but I am not sure at all that it totally goes away. The blessing with this is that it will help you stay away from some foods that you used to like. I had a cast iron stomach prior to surgery and ate anything, and could eat anything. This is not the case anymore. I do eat anything I want, but my want list is not as big as it used to be. This protects my weight and me from eating everything, so I look at it as a blessing. I asked for the staples, and I have to learn to live with them. They are my buddy not my enemy, so we work together for the desired goal. It works for me. Take care. Patricia P.

Nancy, I'm 4 weeks post op. My husband "gently" reminds me all day that my breath is funky. If water is icky, try Crystal Light. I have that same metallic taste in the morning. I get right up and brush. Keep sugarfree mints or something with you. My surgeon swears to me it'll get better. lol

Hi Nancy, That funky taste is because your body is in ketosis, which means you are losing weight. It will only last a few weeks, then your body will adjust to your new high protein lifestyle and it will go away. Good luck and happy losing, Vicki

I had the same problem, it does go away. I remember one night being woken up from the taste in my mouth being sooooo bad it kept me away all night. Hang in there it gets better every day. Lisa

I had that same problem when I was taking the chewable iron tablets, but as soon as I started swallowing a pill it went away! Take care! Carmen

If you are in the active state of losing (as in weight off each week) your body is in ketosis pretty much like the Atkin diet plan. If anyone was ever on that they probally remember urinating on special test strips to see if they were in "the zone." The zone was ketosis. To also be blunt be cautious of your breath, you be really raunchy and not realize it. SF candy oes help but be careful, they are often high calorie and contain sugar like substances that can actually halt/slow weightloss. Hope this helps-Heather
