Question:
Buying a blender
Hi everyone! My surgery is April 12th and in preparation of making the protein smoothies, I'm looking for a good blender. I saw an infomercial for the "Magic Bullet" blender. Of course, they make it look spectacular! Just wondering if it's worth the investment, or if I should just stick with a regular blender. Thanks for your advice! — Skygirl (posted on April 1, 2007)

First, good luck with your surgery. I have a bullet-style blender that I
got for less than $30, it wasnt the "Magic Bullet" but it had
almost all the same features. I love my bullet blender. Its compact,
fairly powerful and I find it good for my protein shakes but blending
protein shakes can make them foamy.

The Magic Bullet or it's cheaper version(saw it sold at Kohl's) is better
than a Blender as it's sealed closed when mixing thus less air is mixed
into whatever your blending. And if it's a drink such as a Protein Shake,
you'll have less roblems such as burping back-up in your body.

I bought a "Party Blender" in Eckerds for about $11. It's
exactly the same as the bullet but I also like using my blender. I never
know if I'm overfilling the bullet and I sort of prefer the consistancy of
the shakes using the blender. There are blenders with a dispenser so the
shake comes out easily, I'd probably get one of those if I was purchasing a
blender again...I like the Osters, they are made well.

I don't have bullet so can't comment on it but I did get a mini blender at
Walmart. It is a Hamilton Beach and was only 15 dollars. I love it. I had
RNY in early Jan 07 so am on regular foods now but when I needed blended
and puree it was just the thing. It even did meats to the proper
consistancy for me as I added them to my diet. Good Luck and God Bless.

I bought a Magic Bullet after my RNY. I was very disappointed in it b/c I
used it so much for shakes, etc. and the gears at the bottom did not match
up. They were made from a hard rubber material and this literally
shredded. I tried to replace just that part and when looking at the site,
I found that you not only could not replace the individual part, but that
many others had this problem also. I found a cheaper version, like the
other responders, that was just as good, if not better. If you do buy the
bullet, make sure that everything is lined up every time and don't remove
it until it has completely stopped. That was part of my problem. But I
thought it was pretty "pricey" for no longer than it lasted.
Best of luck on your surgery. You are in for the best time of your life!!!

I bought the Magic Bullet prior to my lapband and I use it everyday. I
found it to be very usefull and easy to use with my arthritis then the one
that is by Hamilton. I have trouble getting the Hamilton to lock and then
getting it to unlock so that I can clean it and getting it off the base is
a whole other problem. Good luck with the surgery.

I bought a mini processor at Bed,Bath and Beyond. It's small, cute and
worked well for me!! It was $29.99 but with coupon, it was $25.

I was going to buy a magic bullet knock off and the lady at the store
actually told me that The Magic Bullet was a lot better and told me where
to get one. The honesty she showed made me still buy something else from
the store.

I started out with the $25 one that WalMart sometimes has that is their
version of the Magic Bullet. I swore by it for every protein shake I ever
made. On a whim, and after seeing a deal on an infomercial for a BoGo on a
Magic Bullet, I bought one about 3 months ago. It has so much more power
than my off brand one, and I love it even more than the original one.
Either way you go, I think having one of these blenders is almost a
necessity when you are going to be drinking as many protein shakes as we
do. My favorite way of making them is to use Strawberry Spirutein powder
and milk. Always put liquid in first, then powder. Don't put the powder in
first or it will stick to the bottom of the glass. I then throw in 2-3 ice
cubes which not only makes it nice and cold, but also thickens it a bit...
just as good as a milkshake! Also, something to remember is that you can
use vanilla protein powder and always throw in some fresh fruit. ( I use
frozen and then leave out the ice cubes) This gives you a wider bit of
variety as well.
Good luck!

I am still pre-op but I bought the Kohl's version (knock off) of the
bullett for $22.50 on sale and I really like it. I also went to Wal-Mart
and bought a smoothie machine made by Back to Basics for $10. I have done
alot of reading and think that there will be way too many air bubbles after
my surgery with the smoothie machine. I have been trying to increase my
protein level in my pre-op stage. About 6-8 months ago my PCP told me my
protein level in my blood was a little low and to increase my protein
intake. I thought this could not hurt and have started doing this. I use
the unflavored Any Whey from GNC and mix it with whatever suits my fancy
every morning. I like both products so far.

Thanks for all the advice!! I went ahead and bought a Magic Bullet today at
Bed, Bath and Beyond today, because I had a 20% off coupon, which helped
with the cost! I made a banana smoothie when I got home for my husband, and
he said it was really smooth! I hope the protein smoothies I have to have
will taste good to me after my surgery.
