Question:
I HAVE 15 DAYS UNTILL SURGERY HOW SHOULD I BE EATING?VITAMINS?
I am scheduled for surgery on Feb.23 and I need to know if I need to start on liquids only. I have read in other profiles where people are on a pre-op diet. I guess it depends on the surgeon but mine didn't tell me anything about pre op diets or to go ahead and start on the vitamins. Do you think it would be good for me to go by a liquid diet and start on vitamins to get a jumpstart to a better health or go ahead and eat, eat, eat while I can? — WannaBSlim (posted on February 8, 2006)

I have surgery scheduled on the same date-they told me to get a little
plate, a little baby spoon. Lay off soda, alcohol...CHEW my food. Up the
protein. Try and lose weight before the surgery. This way you will have
less fat around your liver, and you will be better off going into it.
Believe me I need to start taking my own advice. It is hard because you
feel like it is a "divorce" from food that has been a comfort for
so long. It is....we've already eaten while we could-that's why we are at
this point. You don't want to go into total shock after surgery. I think
it is good to really start practicing those post-op habits now :)

Melissa,
My surgeon makes everyone go on Slim Fast for two weeks before surgery.
The purpose is to drastically shrink your liver.
A fatty large liver obtructs and hinders the surgeon's work.
He strongly recommends 3 Slim Fast Shakes per day, but says
you can have two shakes and a reasonable low fat, low carb meal. Upon
further questioning by me, he allowed me to do three shakes a day, and a
couple of snacks. I found that dill pickles, or a stick of beef jerkey
were both low in carbs and fat, but satisied my eating urge. But they are
both high in sodium so make sure you're ok with blood pressure.
Occasionally, I put a vanilla Slim Fast in the blender with a banana or a
few frozen peaches & ice for a nice fruit shake.
Also occasionally a can of soup made with water is an ok substitute for a
SlimFast. Key word here is OCCASIONALLY.
Also I was told to take a good vitamin TWICE a day. On my last 3 days I
was told to cut all the snacks and just stick to Slim Fast. You can show
this to your surgeon and see what he says. Do not " EAT EAT EAT"
You need that liver small. I am 8 weeks post-op RNY. Bill Simpson,

I was told to lay off vites a couple of weeks before surgery because there
are certain vites that have a blood thinning effect. You had better ask
your surgeon. I didn't have a pre-op diet until two days before surgery. I
wish I had, I drank sooo much diet coke,because I knew I couldn't after
surgery that I was actually dehydrated while I was in the hospital. Good
Luck on your journey it is an awesome one. Open RNY Sept 29th 2005 - 71 lbs
so far. Pam :^)

Melissa, every surgeon is different. Mine put me on a clear liquid diet 2
days before surgery. You should ask your surgeon or dietician to find out
what your doctor wants. Good luck. I am 7 months out and 118 lbs gone.

Melissa,
Please seek the advice of your surgeon. I know it is easy to want to follow
what others say and do or have done on this wonderful site, but you are
under the care of your surgeon and he/she will know what is best for you.
Congrats on your surgery date. Judy

I know others have said this, but definitely follow your own surgeon's
directions. It would be important to find out what those are.

I agree that you should check with your surgeon regarding specific diet
needs prior to surgery, but for the record, cutting back and eating healthy
meals at this time is a great idea, even if the surgeon doesn't require it.
Also, a liquid diet one or two days prior is also good, and will help with
a cleaner intestinal tract for the surgery.
Good luck! Every Dr. is different as is every patient, but we all
have a common goal.........be healthier!

No all surgeons require a lengthly liquids only diet. If your sugeons
didnt say he's one of them that doesnt. the only FAST rule you can not
break is NOTHING by mouth after midnight the day of your surgery. As far
as vitamins. If you have them it wouldnt 'hurt to do them, again just
nothing after midnight.

You should speak with your surgeon/physician about what type of diet, if
any, you should be on.

Gosh, I had a month between the time I was told I was approved for surgery
and the day of surgery ... I ate and ate and ate and gained 11 more lbs. I
was so sick of eating by the time surgery came around, I didn't care if I
ever ate again.

I only had to go to liquids the day before surgery. I also had to take
this gross stuff to clean me out.
