At 11 days out I was still only eating liquids or mushy stuff. Not a chicken patty. Different surgeries have different size pouches to start with, mine was 4 ounces, and I've seen them as small as 1/2 ounce. So while I am more concerned with the food choice than the quantity, I wouldn't be concerned with stretching your pouch from one meal. It takes many many meals, stuffing yourself to misery to accomplish such detremental stretching. But by eating solid foods, especially processed chicken patties, you may do some damage on your stoma. That is just my uneducated opinion. :) Rebecca 10/03/01 265/140

Keep in mind, that the 'hunger feeling' is a little askew at the moment. It would make sense the 'full feeling' is as well. I honestly did not FEEL hunger for 3 months after my surgery. And during that time, full didn't register until I was utterly stuffed. Just be aware that just because it is not coming back up, doesnt meen you are not full. Find out what size pouch you have and measure what you are eating until you get a good eye for how much your tummy can handle. It's hard making this adjustment, but you will be fine. REbecca

Did your surgeon give you a diet to follow? I was on pureed, for 4 weeks, I would be concerned about the new stiches and staples in there. Did you by chance puree it and add a little gravy to help it go down? Maybe try home made chicken salad, ham salad, egg salad, cottage cheese... feed your new tummy like its a new baby and you will get along fine. Enjoy the ride!

I ate pureed food for 2 weeks, my surgeon said it was ok but I wasn't even able to eat more than a few pureed spoonfuls of food that early on. When in doubt ask your DR!

jennifer, you should call your surgeon and try to find out what size he made your pouch. If he made it two ounces, then you should be measuring out two ounces of food. right now, you should measure everything that goes into your mouth and you will not stretch your pouch. Don't just keep on eating because you can. All of our food plans vary according to our doctors but basically, we eat high protein, low fat, low carbs low or no sugar. Most of the surgeons allow nothing but protein until you have lost at least 75 percent of your excess weight. it can be a trial and error thing as to what foods will agree with you. Some days you will be able to eat something just fine and the next day, it might make you sick. But on the amounts, you need to be measuring your food at least this early out. Right now at eleven months out, I am only able to eat about three ounces of meat. my dietician told me a good way to measure meat is to open your hand and the amount that would fit into your palm is about four ounces. She said i should eat that amount three times a day but i can't. Also are you drinking shakes yet? What did your surgeon have to say about that. Plus, it takes a few minutes for our brain to tell our stomachs we are full, so measure your food, eat slowly, take 15-20 minutes per meal and stop whether you are full or not. We are here for you if you need more help. The message board is a good place to go to get food ideas at your stage.

I am surprised that your surgeon sent you home with so few guidelines. I am 14 days post op and still on liquids. My surgeon is very specific with what is allowed at each stage. We are on liquids for 1st 4 weeks, then soft/pureed for 4 weeks, then gradually add solids as tolerated.

Every Dr. has different rules. My Dr. said fruits and veggies for two weeks. No sugar and at 2 weeks you can have flaky white fish. Eat very slowly and chew carefully. I was hungry alot too! Eat small amounts every two hours.

Jennifer, it is trial and error in the beginning month or two as to what our new pouches can handle. I'm surprised your surgeon did not give you a better menu plan. All of them are different, however, most require a soft/puree type of diet at your stage until 3-4 weeks out. You should be eating things like cottage cheese, soft eggs, soft steamed white fish, tuna fish/crab/egg/chicken salad, mushy cooked veggies, oatmeal, any type of eggs, cream soups, yogurt, toast with peanut butter, cheeses, refried beans. And protein shakes or drinks! At about 4 weeks post-op try some more solid foods like shrimp, other fishes, crab cakes, deli meats, hot dogs, very soft dark meat chicken (crock pot soft is best). By 5-6 weeks I was eating salad, and more solid foods like ground beef, turkey etc. Just go slow when trying new foods. A chicken patty is something that should wait until 3-4 weeks out and dip it in sauce so that it is less dry. and definitely drink more!!

I am 6 weeks post op and was released to "normal" food at a slow pace at 4 weeks post.. My surgeon said that the reason for the liquid (2weeks) and then puree (2weeks) food was to let the pouch heal and learn to digest again..

Jennifer-I would ask your surgeon to refer you to a nutrionalist. They are all different, but, I was on strictly liquid for 20 days, and currently one month pureed and next week should go to more solid/soft foods. I couldn't even handle the smell of food at 11 days. I feel I have a bit of an appetite now but early on I was only eating for strength and because I had to. Best of Luck!
