Question:
Can you help me find a calulator . . .
that can help me figure out how much protein I actually need for my height & weight.? Thanks :) — Michele D. (posted on October 26, 2003)

You can also take your weight and multiply it by .3 (point 3). This is what
my dietician told me to do.

My weight's now 128-130 lbs (5'7"), so multiplied by .3, that would
mean I need 39 grams of protein. That's a lot less than the 60 gram
minimum I read about around here (source of which, I don't know, but my
doc's dietician recommended at least 60, too). At 17 months out (at/past
goal for 8 months), I probably get about 120 grams of protein a day now
(half from shakes). My labs have remained in the low-normal range the
whole time, so my doc recommended I stick with my shakes (which I would've
done anyway), lest I fall into the "below normal" range for
protein. And I'm only a proximal RNY, 75 cm. bypassed. It could just be
me, but given all that, I think the .3 formula sounds far too low (and,
does it take into account that we malabsorb protein as a result of this
surgery)?
In addition to whatever formulas you may find, I'd watch your labs, over
time, to help you determine what level works best for you. :-)
