My friend had the surgery on April 30th. By Memorial day she was going crazy with itching. She called her surgeon who told her to take benedryl. Her hives remained with her until she went to her primary care physician and he gave her a cortizone shot. I have seen others on this site who have said don't have the cortizone shot without your surgeon's OK. All I know is that it was the thing that cured her itch.

I started itching about 4 mos. out. The allergist can't seem to diagnose me, accept to say that she thinks it is related to the surgery. A Zyrtec in the morning seems to keep it under control, although it has not gone away completely. Good Luck!

I never had the itch but would recommend talking to your surgeon or PCP about what to use. Pre-op I always took Benedryl for anything relating to allergies. As for your lack of energy, that is normal for being so early post-op. Please do NOT get discouraged. I am almost 10 wks post and really started to feel good about 2 weeks ago. If I have a day that is difficult for food I get wiped out. It does get easier as time goes on...honest.

There's a new Benadryl that melts on your tongue. Also Claritin, the allergy drug, is now over the counter and is the fastest melting medicine I've ever tried sublingual. Talk about gone in 60 seconds -- unbelievable!

hives are nasty little and sometimes large welts, red bumps and in severe cases white circle around them, Benedryl 25mg is recommended every 4 to 6 hrs and sometimes in severe cases 50 mg. They usually last 4 to 6 weeks breaking out in different places, going in and comming out. One never knows, Your dr. can give you capsules of Hydrocortizone to mix with a tbsp of apple sauce. for all bypass patiens. cold wet washcloth can also help the itching, and remember Never scratch at hives , it only makes it worse. only lightly pat them like softly stroking a kitten, and wet compress Cold, will help good luck with hives, I've had them for 55 yrs. and have learned to deal with those monsters of the skin. good luck < JulietteM
