Question:
Does anyone remember the Cambridge Diet?
I keep reading about all of the diets everyone has tried, but the horror story of my youth, the "Cambridge Diet" is never mentioned. Did anyone else do this diet? I was forced by my step-mom to drink that horrid liquid crap 3 times a day and eat nothing else, but I've yet to meet anyone else who ever heard of it. Just curious. Thanks! — [Anonymous] (posted on August 27, 2001)

Yes! I remember that. I was never on it, but I do remember a few people
who were...back in 1989? I remember one woman who had lost a LOT of
weight, and then one day she was at her parents and took a tiny , tiny
little bite of italian bread. Within in a few minutes she had to go to the
hospital with a very bad gallbladder attack. I guess those drinks had NO
fat in them and since there was no fat, your gallbladder shuts down?
Horror story from what I remember ....and dangerous.

My husband did the cambridge thing and lost about 80 pounds. When he quit
he gained it all back and some and now anykind of a drink like that makes
him gag thats why I not him had this surgery.

What was/is the Cambridge Diet? What's this awful stuff you had to drink?
From the sound of these posts, this diet sounds horrid. I'm glad I wasn't
one of its victims!

Oh yeah, did the Cambridge, lost 20 lbs., gained 30 back! Hmmmm - now that
I think about it, the protein powder I use today tastes much better than
the Cambridge stuff. I remember using tons of ice in the blender to make
it more palatable. -Kate-

Yes, I was on the Cambridge Diet. It was 1982 or 83. Someone at work had
lost about 100 pounds on it, so, of course, I had to do it too. I mixed my
little drinks religiously but never had a great deal of success. I was
maintaining a pretty low weight at the time and hoping to lose another 10
or 15 which didn't happen. I wasn't at all bothered by the taste. It
tasted much better than the Sego diet which I had been on in the 70's...and
even that was more flavorful than Metrical. I'll bet you don't remember
Metrical in the 60's. That was probably the grandaddy of the protein
fasting supplements. As I recall there was also a particularly nasty tasty
Metrical cookie. Is anyone else here old enough to have survived the
Metrical diet?

YES, I REMEMBER THE CAMBRIDGE DIET REALLY WELL. MY PARENTS WERE SELLING IT,
AND WE ALWAYS HAD A CLOSET FULL. MY DAD LOST 120 LBS ON IT, AND GAINED 190
BACK. I LOST ABOUT 30 POUNDS ON THIS DIET, AND WHEN I STOPPED, I GAINED
ABOUT 60 POUNDS BACK. I AM SURPRISED TO HEAR SOMEONE ELSE MENTION THS. I
PUT IT IN MY DIET HISTORY AND THOUGHT NO ONE WOULD REMEMBER THIS ONE.

I remember Cambridge! So horrible- griitty and chalky. I also remember
metrecal and Sego- Goddess! People wjho are desperate will by ANY sort of
swill. I hated them all. I am hopefully pre-op now, and i don't think
having to eat any amount of fish. cottage cheese and chicken will make me
nostalgic for all of that stuff!

I remember that crap big time. It was nasty stuff. We tried to mix it all
kinds of ways. I can totally sympathise with you.

Yes I was on the Cambridge back in 82. I lost 20 lbs in about a month. I
really didnt mind how it tasted but I have a high tolerence for yuckky
tasting stuff. But yes I remember it well. But in the long run nothing like
that really works to keep the weight off. I should know. After 20 years I
just had the surgery.

Oh yes, I had that one down on my list of diets!! I think I did it around
1982-83, it was before I got married. Anyway, I lost about 15 lbs in a
month or so and proceeded to gain it back about 3-4 moths later. Typical of
all my diet attempts!

Yes, I too tried Cambridge. Was on it for 4 weeks and I was absolutely
miserable. The stuff was diluted wallpaper paste and tasted awful.

I did Cambridge for a month in 1981 and lost a grand total of 23 pounds.
330 calories a day, with not even an extra cracker for the whole time. My
first meal after made me so sick I was sure I would die.

I remeber the cambridge diet. I think I lost like 60 or 70 lbs on it I was
only in junior high school. Mind you I gained it all back and then some!

I remember the Cambridge diet very well--I'm sorry to say. I tried it
several different times when I was younger and any little bit of weight
that I lost, I regained plus even more. I finally gave up with that one
and moved on to a different one.
