Question:
I am on liquids and am worried about a leak.
Has anyone ever had a leak while on the liquid phase. I was able to eat more chicken broth than normal today and didn't get the full feeling. Please help ease my mind, I am 9 days post-op Lap RNY. Thanks! — [Anonymous] (posted on August 23, 2001)

Don't worry...I'm sure if it was a leak that you would know it. For the
first few days, liquids filled me too, and I thought I could never eat
again. It's only normal that you will be able to drink larger amounts as
time passed. It's been three months and I chug any liquid.

Dont worry. A leak will cause a infection and serious high fever. No fever
= no leak. Liquids can pass thru post ops fast and prvent a full feeling.

I developed a leak after my surgery 7/17/01. I never had a fever. You can
have a leak with no fever. I had the "classic symptoms" according
to my surgeon. Severe pain in my left ribs that went clear up into my
shoulder that hurt so bad I cried. I felt like someone kicked the heck out
of my left side. I also didn't develope an infection until the beginning of
the third week that I was in the hospital for treatment of the leak. So
initially I had a leak with no fever and no infection...I'm very fortunate.
If you develope pains like that call your dr. ASAP and don't wait four days
like I did. From what you're describing I think you are fine but always
call your surgeon with any concerns. Just my two cents. -Kim

You'll be able to handle larger amts of liquid as the swelling of your
stomach goes down.
