I think that instead of considering diet pills of any kind, maybe a better
idea would be to see why you are grazing. Is it because you are truly
hungry? Then try an extra protein supplement or more water. If it is
emotional, try working through those feelings instead of eating. If it is
from boredom, get involved in some activity. I find that when I am busy
doing something, I don't even think about food until I NEED to eat. I am
not trying to simplify things because I realize that this is the thing that
got us needing WLS in the first place: an out-of-control appetite.

Yes I started taken some a week ago after a month long platoo with some
weight gain. I am not graizing however at 3.5 months post op I'm scared I'm
not going to lose anymore after this bad month.
It's not that I'm over-eating ether. I'm not! I just don't know what is
going on. Now it seems I am losing again. Don't know if it's the pills or
if it would have happened anyway but I did'nt go through surgery to quit
losing at this early stage. I hear there is only a "small window of
time" where you lose. The most in the first 6 months, then you lose
all (of whatever you are going to lose) by 18 months. Then not to lose
anything (and gain a couple
pounds) for over a month! I'll do what I have to do to jump start it even
if it is'nt the best way to do it. Diet and exercise have'nt worked yet.

I forgot to mention I'm taking "Utimate Slim" made by Great
American Products. I've never taking Metabolite. But I'm taking "very
small" doses. (But then I took small doses of Phen Phen, not the large
dose I was supposed to). Perhaps that is what saved me from any problems
when others were getting sick from it.

Six months post-opt I tried Metabolite and it didn't work for me. At seven
months I started taking Xenadrine after being at the same weight for 6
weeks and have lost 10 pounds in 1 week. You be the judge.

I'm the one who mentioned the "Utimate Slim". I got weighed today
and after a 4-5 week's of not losing (and two times of gaining weight!) I
finally LOST WEIGHT. I'm down 7.5 pounds in "one week". So I'm
continueing it along with exercising and eating right. Perhaps I would have
lost anyway, but I'm not taking that chance. If it works, it works.

Whenever someone asks these questions, I have to speak up. Be very careful
of diet pills. They are not proven to be very effective, and are proven to
be dangerous. Most diet pills contain Ephedra. This is a natural form of
speed, far more potent than caffeine. These natural forms of speed can
lead to many side effects, especially psychologically. Please discuss this
with your surgeon before you try to artificially stimulate your body.
There may be other things you can do, especially at only 3 or 4 months.
Remember, plateaus are normal and don't mean that you are failing or losing
your window. I know the best plateau buster there is is exercise. That
has no ill side effects. I don't mean to sound like a know it all here,
but I did Metabolife for 18 months and I think it did a lot of harm and I
lost no weight. My surgeon told me to never touch the stuff again, with or
without surgery. Do some research on Ephedra, the same way you researched
this surgery. It is not safe.

The previous post is right on the money about "Ephedra"!
I thought I came close to a heart attack on that stuff. I now use the
Ultimate Slim (1/3 to 1/2 strenght only) and that does'nt have it. (It has
caffine but I'm numb to that. Even JOLT does'nt "jolt" me.) I
look closely for any possibility of Ephedra... it's a killer. I'm sure
using anything now is not good, but when I'm 3.5 months post op and have a
4-5 week platoo, well that covers almost a third of the time post op! I can
stand two weeks but there is only a small curtin of time post op to lose
and I did'nt go through painful surgery (last ditch hope to lose) not to
lose. But you are right and thank you for being honest and stating it!
There are some things in diet pills that are very dangerous. I hate to even
have to resort to it, but at least I have one that does'nt bother my heart.
If I feel "anything" that makes me just "begin" to feel
that way.... IT'S GONE. My health is ultimately more importand than a
platto.

The thing to remember with ephedrine is that you can't use it and sit
around and not eat right. I have friends who workout everyday and use
ephedrine and none of them have problems. They never start off with the
full dosage, consult their doctors FIRST, and they don't abuse them. First,
check with your doc and have him do an EKG and other tests to check for any
potential health problems. Every products label has warnings about using
the product if you have certain health problems, not heading them and
getting sick as a result is on your own hands. Shop around for a product
with a very mild amount of ephredra. The more overweight you are the milder
the supplement should be or find an ephedra free thermogenic. Many people
who use these products to lose weight abuse them sometimes taking twice the
dosage, they eitther don't eat at all or eat all the wrong things and don't
exercise. NO DRUG OR SURGERY WILL WORK IF YOU DON'T CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOR
ACCORDINGLY!!!!! Also, consult your doc before starting ANY supplement.
Much of this ephedra panic is just hype and a way for lawyers to line there
pockets with class action suits. If you have have health problems such as
high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, ect (as MOST of us here have) then
don't use them without questioning your physician if at all. The problems
that many of us here have go far beyond anything that ephedra, Dexatrim,
Atkins, and extra cardio can fix. That's why we have chosen surgery and
should avoid diet drugs if we've gotten to this point. Is ephedra a killer?
It can be if misused and so can anything else.

As far as Ephedra (ma huang etc there are so many other names for
ephendrine) it's really a killer, I know a man, his story was featured in
newsweek magazine about a month or 2 ago, he was in the army ran 3 miles a
day, worked out constantly, physical health and well being was a huge part
of his life, he was taking this drink called "ultimate orange"
for a better performance level (or energy) well, he was running on the
tread mill, and next thing he knew he was surrounded by doctors in the ER
he had a stroke due to the ultimate orange, his whole right side of his
body is paralyzed...he just began to learn how to do some of the things he
used to do before his stroke, well it's a long story but a good one I
think, due to the fact that ephedrine or ephedra isn't an actual
pharmaceutical drug it's loosely regulated by the FDA, which is sad because
it's hurting so many people. So in my opinion, anything with this
"herbal supplement" in it, should never be taken before or after
surgery.
