I didn't have one. My surgeon says that at one time he inserted one routinely for all his rny patients. He stopped because there generally isn't a need for one.

I heard from several people that their drainage tube went down the nose. I was pleasently surprised that mine came right out an inch and a half away from my surgery scar! Mine was in two, of the three days I was in the hospital. It was'nt bad at all. :)

You can go to my web page and look at my May 15th picture and see where my drainage hole is.

I had an open RNY on 7/17 and still have my G tube in. My Dr says I have to keep it for 3 weeks and will have mine removed on 8/7. I can't tell you how much I hate it. It is causing me constant discomfort and keeps reminding me that I am not well yet. I have begged my dr to take it out but he says that the main reason for it is to make the stomach adhere to the abdomen wall. Some people at our support groups say theres does not bother them at all. So it could be that yours will be the same. I had another tube on the right hand side which they removed before I left the hospital. The G tube that I still have is also a protection in case there are any problems after WLS. They can use it to feed you. Good Luck

Mine was Naso-gastric and came out the following morning. I was so drugged I didn't feel a thing!

I asked my Dr. this question today at my Pre-op appt. He said I would have a drainage tube for awhile but I would'nt necessarily have to leave the hospital with it. I'm also having open on Monday 8-6.

I had a drainage tube in my stomach for a week. It was to drain excess fluid that was built up there after surgery. It came out in a week I had to empty it several times a day.

I had Open RNY just 2 weeks ago today, I had NO drainage tube. I had the NG tube for 3 days while in ICU and that is it. Seems like is depends on the Doctor.

You did not say what kind of drainage tube you meant. My surgeon routinely puts on a JP drain to indicate if the patient has a leak of any kind. They generally wear them for about a week. He was not doing this when I had surgery in January and I ended up in ICU with severe complications from a leak. Maybe they are not completely necessary but I know the patients in my support group deal with them knowing they can rest assure of a leak problem.

I had an open RNY on 6-19-01 and am really glad to say..no tubes! No drainage tube, no nasogastric tube and even no catheter for urine. I was very pleased with this entire lack of tubes! Good luck.
