Question:
Ive seen several people refer to not being able to take motrin
and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories post op. Why is this? They dont work that well for headache, but are great for cramps! — [Anonymous] (posted on July 24, 2001)

They can cause gastric distress (pain or bleeding) in a normal stomach for
some people. But for someone with a teeny tiny pouch, the effect is many
times magnified. I, personally, had not been able to take aspirin,
ibuprofen or NSAIDS for years. Ouch + ulcer. Bad deal all around. Now,
it's rather like dropping a bomb in that eensy little pouch.

Good question. I am 5 days pre-op. I'm sure that is has something to do
with the new pouch. It probably really does a number on such a small pouch,
since it can do a number on a lot of full size stomachs. I wasn't really
given an exact reason why, but at my consult on April 1st, 2003. I was told
that I would need to stop anything aspirin based 2 weeks prior to surgery.
Well, I just stopped taking them that day. This wasn't easy for me. Being
the ibuprofen taker that I was. I have bad shoulder, and neck pain. I took
a lot of ibuprofen to subside the swelling and pain. But, for over 2 months
now I have taken tylenol for pain. This has worked okay for me. I just
liken not being able to have ibuprofen to just a small thing I have to give
up for a much healthier life.
