Question:
What was your diet right after surgery?
This is for all of the postops who are on the full protein diet. What did you eat right after surgery and beyond? pureed meats? Please give an example of your everyday menu following surgery. Thanks. Dana — Dana N. (posted on July 23, 2001)

Two Words.... Bean Soup. I loved it! Lots of protein too! I also used to
eat the green pea soup. I diluted it with milk which added protein. And
since it's liquid, I had no problem with it and, frankly, you are able to
eat more of it, just DON'T EAT FAST! That's my #1 advice to you and all
of the new post-ops.... S-L-O-W Down! I didn't, and I PAID for weeks
before I figured out my problem. What seems slow to you now, is WAY too
fast for post-op..... trust me. For example, I'm sitting here working on a
beef hunan lean cuisine that I started cooking over an hour ago. Cottage
cheese is another good choice, and I like the 2% individully wrapped cheese
slices. They go down good and are great for taking to work for a protein
snack. I wish you success in your journey!

I am six days post op and today was my first day on anything besides
liquids. A sample diet plan for this level, provided by my surgeon,
includes: breakfast: either 1/2 egg (w/yolk okay - but fried in pam), or
1/4 cup cream of wheat made with nonfat milk; lunch: either 1/4 cup non-fat
cottage cheese or 1/4 cup refried beans (fat free/vegetartian) w/ 1/2 oz
reduced fat cheese; dinner: 1/2 cup blended soup or potato topped with
nonfat cottage cheese (1/2 cup total). Since today's only one, all I've
had is beans and some yogurt. But, boy, was it good to supplement the
protein supplements!!! ;-) Good luck to you.
