Question:
I am scheduled for a lap RNY, I neglected to ask my surgeon the length of time the
actual operation takes. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks — Sue T. (posted on July 18, 2001)

There are a lot of variables that can affect the length of surgery. Both
my husband and I have had lap DS surgeries with the same surgeons, highly
skilled and experienced in lap (one is the chief of laproscopic surgery).
My surgery took just over 2 hours. My husband's took almost 5 hours - he
was a bit larger than I was, and carried his weight more in the middle. I
know some RNY folks who had their laps done in less than 2 hours. - Kate -

I had mine done that way a week ago and it took 5 hours. They can tell you
at the hospital. And the way my doc explained it. It s better to take the
time the first time then to open you back upto repair aleak or something I
came through just fine.

The length of the surgery can depend on several factors (complications
during the procedure, weight of the patient, pre-existing adhesions,
etc...), but the experience and expertise of the surgeon is certainly a key
factor. My daughter's and husband's surgeries lasted one hour....mine
lasted 1 hour 10 minutes. Our weights ranged from 325 to 406 lbs....we had
no complications or problems during or after the surgeries. Good luck!

I had my Lap RNY in December. Surgeon told my husband it would be around an
hour and a half or so. Mine ended up taking about three and a half hours,
due to some adhesions.
