Question:
I can eat alot more than most post ops, is it the type of surgery I've had?
I am almost 6 months post op. I've lost almost 100lbs. When I read about how much people eat it scares me. I had the BPD/DS and seem to be able to eat whatever I want and keep losing weight. I have 40 more pounds to go til goal weight. I eat normal size meals and then it seems to go through me within a couple hours and I'm hungry again. Is it because of the type of surgery I have had,or should I be concerned?? — [Anonymous] (posted on July 18, 2001)

I too can eat pretty much what I want. If you are still losing I would'nt
worry to much. But do try to watch it though. Myself I try to avoid sugar
and carbohydrates as much as possible as that was my weakness before. What
ever your weakness' were, be careful with them. You sound like you are
doing things right to me. But I'm not your doctor. Perhaps ask him/her.
Keep up the weight loss!

I guess "normal" is the operative word here. What you're
describing sounds pretty much like my pattern. I eat a normal sized meal,
and in a few hours I'm hungry again! So, for me, a normal meal would be a
piece of fish the size of my hand, maybe 8 string beans, and a tablespoon
of potatoes. Last night's dinner was a chicken breast and about 6 french
fries, followed by a slice of watermelon. These seem pretty normal to me,
and this normalcy in eating is one of the reasons I went with the BPD/DS.

I also had the DS. I am 3 months post op now, and find that it is easier
and easier to eat every day. One of the reasons I chose to have the BPD/DS
is so I would be able to eat a "normal" meal. I am unable to
overeat, but I can eat about 4 oz of meat, a little potato or rice, and a
few veggies. It takes a while though. I can't chow down like I did in the
pre surgery days. It sounds like you are doing fine, and your weight loss
is great! There are a couple of yahoo groups out there for DSers you may
want to consider joining if you havn't already.... TRY
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/duodenalswitch AND
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/postopeating..... Here you can discuss
several subjects about your surgery with other people who have specifically
had the DS. There are some members on the postopeating group that have had
other surgeries, but the majority are DSers. Hope to see you there. If you
have any questions feel free to e-mail me personally.
