Question:
Are there many African-Americans suffering from hair lost?
I would like to know if many African-American patients suffered noticeable hair-loss following WLS. How long after, and what did you use (products) or take to help? — Miss G. (posted on July 8, 2001)

Hey Miss G. That is one of the topics we've been talking about in the
OSSG-Black email group. To join, go to yahoogroups.com and search under
OSSG-Black. Hope to "see" you there!

I've read a lot of answers to this question and I would also like to know
if there's something that specifically targets African-Americans hair
texture. I just don't recognize any of the product and to be honest, I'm
afraid that they just won't work on our hair. I sure hope someone helps
with this question. I'm pre-op until 07/13/2001.

I'm a "club member" also. I personally know of 4 AA's who have
had wls and each of us has lost well over 100lbs. Not one of us
has suffered any hairloss. When I asked my surgeon about this
prior to my surgery, he said that most people with heavy, coarse
hair have nothing to worry about. Those with very straight and/or
fine hair are the ones who have to be concernced. I'm not sure
how prevalent hair loss really is anyway. No one in my support
grout....regardless of ethnicity....has had any hair loss.
