Question:
I HAD A LAP RNY SHOULD I GET A MEDICAL ALERT BRACELET?
WHAT IMPORTANT INFORMATION SHOULD I HAVE ENGRAVED ON IT? — MaryAnn S. (posted on June 29, 2001)

The people in my support group suggested that when I have my surgery I
should get a medical alert braclet that says ..no NG tube without scope.
Apparently there could be problems with the pouch if they try to put an NG
tube in without looking first.

I bought a 14 k gold one for myself ($325) and now I never wear it! First
of all, it is difficult to put on and difficult to take off. I wish I
hadn't spent that kind of money so if you do get one, get a cheaper one.
Secondly, many have pointed out, that if you are in an accident, like a car
accident, most likely the emergency room people aren't going to insert an
NG tube to feed you! Why would they? And when they see the BIG scar (with
open) they are going to know that you have had some kind of
stomach/intestinal surgery! Of course, if it makes you feel better, by all
means, get one. I do like the card that you get to carry in your wallet.
I am leaving on a cruise today, with a flight to Seattle, and I am not
wearing my bracelet so you can see how important it is at this point.
Right after surgery, it may be more important. Any one have any insight
into this that I might be missing?

I have been wearing a 14Kt MedicAlert bracelet for several years because of
some other medical problems. I do not have trouble putting it on or taking
it off because I wear it all the time - to sleep, shower, swim, whatever.
My husband gave it to me as an anniversary present several years ago
because he cares about me and figured that "jewelry" is always a
good anniversary gift. I thought it was thoughtful and deeply caring. I do
plan to send the bracelet back for the engraving for "no NG" tube
because there ARE accidents and other emergent conditions where an NG tube
may be placed without a scope. I don't even want anyone doing a scope
without knowing what they are about to run in to. By the way, engraving is
free if additional conditions need to be added later on.
