Question:
After insurance approval, has anyone switched surgeons?
I have been approved for surgery but now I'm considering, for serveral reasons, switching surgeons. Has anyone done that, and how did you insurance company handle it? — Terry A. (posted on June 26, 2001)

As long as the procedure and diagnosis codes are the same, that is, you're
not changing from RNY to DS for example, the insurance company will only
need to have the new surgeon submit the relevant info. You won't have to go
through the entire process again. Be sure to check if the new surgeon is
participating in the co's network, unless you are prepared to pay out of
network expenses. Hope this helps.

Actually this has been done many times. It would really depend on if the
new surgeon was a provider for your insurance. A few months ago a good
friend of mine did this and all she did was contact the insurance company
with a
letter provided by the new surgeon. They had already approved the surgery
and since the new surgeon was on their plan it didn't make any difference.
She got approval notification within a day or so.
