Question:
Where in the WORLD can I get this RNY done reasonably priced,
by a good doctor? Mexico? Spain? Thanks. It's my 3rd back-up plan. — Helena R. (posted on June 22, 2001)

What's your 1st & 2nd backup plan? Were you denied?
Do you have insurance?

If you have United Health Care ... take a trip to Houston to the NeWeigh
Clinic! Dr. Ferrari or Dr. Jayakumar -- they are WONDERFUL! and have done
tons of RNY operations. Check out their names on this website. They take
care of dealing with ALL the insurance info for you and go to bat if you're
denied. Phone no. 713-795-0200; fax 713-795-0300.
Everyone at that office, including all the patients are fantastic. I love
going to the waiting room and chatting and learning about the RNY. I am
post-op RNY, 5 mos. & have lost 65 lbs. and feel great. They sent my
info in and in less than one week it was back and approved. I did have to
wait one month before I could have the surgery because so many people are
having it now days (and then I gained 11 lbs, what fun!). Eating was my
comfort, play, everything and now I'm really not interested in the things I
used to love. I was an emotional eater also ... even now if I'm understress
I will think "geez, I wish I had some ice cream & cookies"
but I wouldn't think of touching it (I don't like getting sick!). Good
luck!

I just had the RNY gastric bypass at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater
Fl. My Dr was Barry Haicken MD in Clearwater who was wonderful. To get the
good price you have to pay everthing up front. All my pre-op testing was
paid by insurance company. My PCP used sleep apnea as a diagnosis for the
sleep study, bloodwork, endoscopy ect. My Dr. charged $6000.00 which
included his assistant. The anethesia was $900.00. I got a 25% discount for
paying that up front. The hospital was $8,000.00. Doesn't matter if your
there 3 days or thirty it is same price, it just has to be paid up front.
I was in for 4 days and 3 of those days were in ICU. So everything it cost
me approx. $15,000.00. I took out a home equity loan. I figure the money
I spent on fast food will make the payment. I am so glad I did this!

WLS in Monterey, Mexico at their University is about $8,000 I'm told. They
do have a web site I tripped on one day, but was told this by a
psychologist who was going there for her surgery. She is from Spain and
practices part time in Monterey and knows the doctors. I wish I spoke
Spanish to feel more comfortable doing it in Mexico.

I clipped this from another site, it has some useful info :)
"I went to Dr. Marchesini in Brazil (November 6 was my surgery date).
The total cost (doctor's fee, hospital, etc.) was $8,000 US (this is due to
the terrible state of the Brazilian currency - the exchange rate for the US
Dollar is almost 4 to 1!). You will need to be there for approximately 2
weeks in total and you'll spend 3 to 4 of those days in the hospital and
the rest of the time in a nearby hotel, which costs about $400 total for 10
days (again, you get the benefit of the great exchange rate). Airfare to
Brazil will run you anywhere from $500 to $1000 depending on where you live
and how good a deal you can get. Dr. Marchesini speaks fluent English and
he actually picks you up at the airport and takes you back to the airport
himself! He is very outgoing, funny, attentive and an excellent doctor.
While you're there, he'll see you at least once a day and talk to you at
least once a day by phone, and at the hospital you'll see him 2 or 3 times
a day. I know it's a scary prospect to travel so far for surgery, but I did
it (along with my sister) and have no regrets. We even were able to go
shopping and had a good time. I was almost sad to come back to the snow and
cold where I live (it's summer now in Brazil). I have also been in touch
with people who've been to Dr. Baltasar in Spain for their surgery and who
speak very highly of him. Dr. B does both open and lap DS (Dr. Marchesini
only does open DS). Dr. B charges approximately $11,000 for open DS and
approximately $15,000 for lap DS (the exchange rate on the Eurodollar is
not as good as Brazil). Dr. B also gives you a shorter common channel (65
cm versus 100 cm with Dr. M). The shorter common channel can help you lose
weight faster (and maybe help to maintain weight loss post-surgery), but
there's a greater chance of malnutrition with the shorter common channel
(although I have not heard of any of Dr. B's patients having any problems
with this). The facility in Brazil is a full-service private hospital, so
if something were to go wrong, they can handle it right there, whereas I
understand the facility in Spain is not a full service hospital, so you
would need to be transferred to a hospital if there were a problem). Also
in Brazil you get a large hospital bed that adjusts so that you can find a
comfortable spot (if any!) post-surgery. Anyway, good luck with your
decision, and know that if you have to self-pay, don't be afraid to go to
either Brazil or Spain if necessary"

I had my open rny on 1/17/03 in Ensenada, Mexico (in Baja) with Dr.
Alejandro Aguirre. Dr. Aguirre is an excellent doctor. He was trained in
the US has been doing gastric bypass surgery for over 14 years and has done
over 450 surgeries. He is very caring. It was very reasonable. It cost
me a total of about $7,500.00 for everything - including my airfare and
hotel for after the surgery.

I called Dr. Aguirre on 8/12/03 and he quoted me $8,000. He is booked for
the rest of this year. I got a date on January 26,2004 and my friend,Myra,
has one for the next day. We are sssooooo excited! My insurance would not
pay for it and my friend didn't have any insurance. We checked on prices
for flights going to San Diego, CA from Houston, Texas (about 6 1/2 hrs.
from where I live) and the cheapest is $319.00 per person round trip. I
haven't checked on the hotels as of yet, though. Hope this info is helpful
to you.

Update: We (my friend,Myra, and I)are going to Ensenada on Oct.7 and
having surgery the 8th and 9th. He lowered it to $7,500. Dr. Aguirre had
a couple of cancellations and now we have only a few weeks to prepare for
it. We're sssoooooo excited.
