Question:
I like to eat Smart ones by Weight Watchers and Healthy Choice dinners from the

supermarket. Are these ok to eat, or are they to high in calories? Most of them have between 290 and 310 calories. If anyone could answer this question, it would be very helpful and appreciated. I am 10 weeks post op and I have lost 42 lbs and I dont want it to mess my weight loss up.    — Ang B. (posted on June 19, 2001)

There's nothing wrong with eating frozen WW dinners @ 300 calories per serving. You should however try to find ones that are low in carbs and high in protein. If you eat the Salsibury steak or turkey dinners, focus on the meat first, then veggies and finally carbs. I've eaten them all along. No one questions it at work and they are very satisfying. One last note, for some reason, post op I cannot tolerate Lean Cuisines. They made me vomit. I know others that have no problem with them. Weird huh?

They should be OK to eat. You won't be able to eat all of it anyway. I would start out with the meat or protein part of the dinner and if you have room left try some of the rest of it. I like to eat frozen macaroni & cheese. One dinner lasts me for two meals.

I like these dinners too! The only thing I don't like about them is their "high sodium" content. But in my case I don't add salt to anything I eat so hopefully that ballences it out. We need some salt anyway. I just wish I could afford to get them more than once in a blue moon. Even on sale they are expensive.

I do NOT like the flavor of Healthy Choice dinners...NO FLAVOR....but I realy do like Smart Ones, by Weight Watchers, and they are an excellent source of protein. I do not have to watch my sodium intake, so I dont worry about that, and because Smart Ones has so much flavor, I dont have to add any salt to it anyhow. I defintely recommend Smart Ones, but remember you still have to read that labels...because some of them are high in Sugar or to high in fat. Keep in mind what your nutrionist told you to eat per meal. I am only allowed 7 grams of fat per meal and no more than 5 grams of sugar per meal. I am 3 months post-op with a Open RNY, and I am down 71 pounds.

MY DOCTOR IS DEADSET AGAINST EATING THE WEIGHT WATCHERS, LEAN CUISINE, HEALTHY CHOICE, ETC. SIMPLY BECAUSE HE WANTS YOU TO LEARN HOW TO EAT REGULAR FOODS AND BE ABLE TO LOSE WEIGHT WITH DOING SO. ALSO, BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE TOO HIGH IN SOME FATS AND CARBOHYDRATES, YET TOO RESTRICTIVE IN SOME ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS. HE FEELS THAT IT IS BEST FOR THIS REASON TO PREPARE YOUR OWN FOODS.
