Question:
Hello what is the best protien drink to purchase for taste and no calories or sugar?
Hello I am preparing for the WLS and have seen from others that it is best to use the protien drinks? Is that what everyone else finds to be true? — Carol F. (posted on April 15, 2001)

I don't think there's such a drink as one with no calories and no sugar
(don't we wish there was though!). I use Carb Solutions. It's relatively
pleasant tasting (but don't be expecting a delicious milkshake or you'll be
disappointed) and has no sugar and 120 calories for 20 grams of protein. I
mix it with 12 ounces of water instead of 8 and it's not so thick - tastes
a bit more like chocolate milk. You can find Carb Solutions at grocery
stores and discount stores. You can also go to vitalady.com and order
samples of protein drinks and experiment with them until you find the one
you like. Carb Solutions in inexpensive and convenient for me. I drink
three servings a day for 60 grams of additional protein. I wasn't a
supporter of protein drinks in the beginning because my surgeon does not
suggest them. However, since starting Carb Solutions a couple of months
ago I have become the biggest supporter of protein suppliments. Try Carb
Solutions and also check with vitalady - you won't regret it!! Best wishes
to you!!

After trying several protien drinks I finally tried the one my Dr.
recommended, it's at GNC called Challenge it is a liquid protien, cherry
flavor it does have some sugar. Add it to diet Snapple Cranberry Raspberry
and it's great hardly a taste, I even like it with just water. It only has
18 grms per 3 TB, so I add 4. I have easily added 2-3 drinks a day

Dear Carol,
My nutritionist/Dietician, told me and numerous others in our nutrition
classes that protein drinks or supplements are unnecessary. All they will
do is make you plateau sooner and not lose the weight as quick. In the
long run, after about a month or so, you will be getting all the protein
you need from food sources. The extra protein will not make you keep your
hair. If you are going to lose, you are going to lose regardless. The
hair hair loss is due to the malnutrition that your body goes through
because of the rapid weight loss. This is just my info from my sources.
Hope I could help. :)

I hate to post anonymously but I hate getting flamed even worse.
Experience not book education tells me that protein suppliments ABSOLUTELY
do not cause plateaus or decrease weight loss. When I experienced plateau
after plateau I started doing protein drinks and have not had another
plateau and my weekly loss increased by at least one additional pound a
week. My hair loss immediately stopped. It sounds like the nutritionist /
dietician listed below may have had their facts exactly backwards. I'm not
condemning a nutritionist or dietician so please don't condemn me but I
feel we should each remain open minded and try different things. Nutrition
after WLS is not black or white. It is gray. There is no hard and fast
rule that we should all adhere to. In a perfect world we could get all the
protein we need from food. Many of us are unable to do that. Let your
doctor and your body guide you. Once you are post op and if you feel that
protein drinks will help you then give them a try. If you do choose to use
protein drinks don't replace food with them but suppliment food with them.
Check out Michelle Curran's profile. She's very knowledgeable about
protein. I think it's great if people can get sufficient protein through
their diet but most people can't and having protein drinks can been a big
help. I hope you do well in your journey and I hope I didn't offend
anyone.

I have to second "Anonymous." Our bodies are different now, and
don't absorb the vitamins and good stuff from food as they used to.
Protein drinks are pre-digested and so we absorb them quicker. The
"dietician" is probably just that, and we are not on
"diets" nor can we be lumped into the old way of thinking, which
is what most nutritionists and dieticians do. Heck, if the surgeons don't
even have all the research and info on what our bodies should have now, why
would they have it? I've found the ones around here don't help at all
(nutritionists/dieticians, that is). I have found ProBlend 55 (Strawberry
Twist) and the Expreme Pure Pro to be the only proteins I can stand the
taste of. I ordered samples from vitalady first. I tried almost all of
GNC's products, as well as went to health stores, and Trader Joes. I just
can't drink any of the others at all! The ones I mentioned are low in
sugar and carbs and mix with WATER, which is what you want to lose weight.
Good luck!

My surgery date is 6/15/01, but I wanted to get a jumpstart on losing
weight and get as healthy as I could before then. I tried Herbalife, the
High Protein/Low Carb "Gold" Plan. I began 4/6/01 and have lost
16 pounds! I use the Vanilla HP/LC it has 15g protein, 5g carb and 0g
sugar. I mix it with diet orange soda/pop, some ice cubes and blend it in
a blender. It tastes like a "creamsicle". They also have a
simply delicious Peach Mango protein drink (15g protein). However, their
soups leave much to be desired. I loved (most) of it so much I became a
Distributor! Anyone interested in a free sample (protein bars/protein
drinks/or protein drink (vanilla/chocolate), please let me know. One free
sample per household. The "Thermojetics" High Protein/Low Carb
bars are: Chocolate Fudge, Lemon (my favorite) Chocolate Coconut (has real
coconut), and Chocolate Peanut Butter My website will be available later
this month: www.vita123.com Send me an email at: [email protected] for
more info.

I use Ultra Pure Protein Shake. It has 35g of Protein and 2g of sugar in a
12 oz shake. The Frosty Chocolate flavor tastes like thin chocolate
pudding. Their website is http://www.sportnutrition.com and you can buy
their products online if you do a search on Yahoo's shopping site (sorry I
don't remember exactly where I bought it). At $45/24 cans, it seems a
little expensive until you consider that you get two to three times as much
protein than most other suppliments. Good luck! -- Mary

There aren't any without calories, but I'm 2 years post-op and have found
that I don't have to count the calories from the shakes provided I mix them
with water. My body treats them as "free" for some reason. I
could drink a protein shake every hour and lose weight to this day if I
don't do carbs. The ones I like the best are Champion Whey Stack
(Chocolate) and the Nectar flavors.

Hi there! I am about to undergo my own WLS in a couple weeks. I happen to
have my own company (AJ & Associates) that sells some products that
might be of interest. I am not pushing them, but I have found the very
useful myself in the past and am sure that I will use them as part of my
new diet.
We have Wey Protein Shakes (lactose free) - flavors come in Strawberries
and Cream, Vanilla, and Chocolate Fudge. I have the chocolate fudge in
front of me and the ingredients say: 20 g Protein, 150 calaries, 6 g total
fat (1 g saturated fat), fiber 4 g, and No sugar.
We also offer a Protein Powder. Each serving has 8g soy protein, 2g whey
protein, low in fat, and only 45 calories.
If interested, contact me toll free at 1-866-469-8745. God bless, David
