Hi... I've been debating this question for ages and I finally decided that I will say I'm having back surgery (like a disk repair). I chose this because I've already had my gallbladder out and almost everyone knows it, plus I didn't want to say any lurid 'female trouble' because that would be just as humiliating and icky as RNY. The back surgery would explain why I can't bend for a while, plus it's "safe", not sad like cancer or gruesome like bleeding ulcers. And they do back surgery with lasers now so the recovery can be quite fast. As far as explaining the weight loss, I will say that I'm dieting to lessen the strain on my back so my disk won't slip again. Seems perfect to me! Feel free to borrow my 'deception' if you want!

I have told a lot of people that I am had my gall bladder taken out, and everyone believed me...you will have the same recovery time and you would have an incision on your stomach...I think it also went over well with my family and friends, because I have never lied to them, so of course they would not think this is a lie... Good Luck

Major abdomianl surgery and leave it at that. If you get more probing questions, just saw it is a very personal matter which you don't wish to discuss. That'll shut them up!

Right before my surgery, a friend of mine had a surgery called Nissen Fundaplication. That is done as a treatment for gastric reflux disease and involves a tightening of the esophagus. She had trouble eating, was on soft foods at first, lost quite a bit of weight initially. So when I had my RNY I told people I was having surgery "to correct a long-standing gastric problem" (which was true of course.) Everyone knew I had had ulcers and GERD so they just assumed I had the same surgery that she'd had. As I started losing weight and people asked abut it I said "My surgery and stomach problems have required me to change my eating habits" (Also true!!) Good luck. hugs, Ann RNY 9/10/99 260/128

I am doing the same thing as one of the other girls said....fixing the acid reflux problem...and having my gallbladder taken out too. (which I am having that removed) and then I am leaving it at that. I will also say the eating habbits were changed because of the stomach problems...and that's not lying!! My mother gave me such hard time about surgery just for my bad gallbladder the last 3 years. She made me promise her I would try to change my diet and see if it helps my gallbladder...but it hasn't...and it hurts more than ever....so it's time! My mom means well...but has no idea what it is like to be 100+ pounds overweight...she would never understand why I am doing this. She would think I was insane....I know I am insane if I do nothing about it.
