Question:
Will my surgery effect my Norplant?

I am on Norplant (birth control implants in my arm) and have been for two years with great success. Will losing all of this weight from surgery effect my Norplant? Will it change the way Norplant effects me?    — jammie B. (posted on April 1, 2001)

Hi Jammie, I work in a family planning center and have never heard of weight loss effecting Norplant. But you should be aware that if you had the Norplant inserted in the last 2 years you may be less protected than you think. Norplant has recalled their kits due to the expiration date on the packaging. What that means is if you think you are getting 5 years of birth control you may be getting a lot less. Contact the facility who inserted them for you or the Norplant Foundation for further information. Kim
