Question:
How long are post ops taking Zantac after surgery?
I just read a post about docs sending home patients with Zantac. I was not sent home with it and am 18 mos. post op. Is it something I should be taking? My surgeon never gave me much info. as I have learned everything here. Any help would be appreciated. — Dot M. (posted on March 21, 2001)

Hi,I am a post-op bpd/ds and was given zantac at hospital, and was not told
to take any thing when i left.It is now 8 months on and i am getting a
really bad tummy ache every now and then, went back to my doc who did the op
and he said "are you taking your zantac every day"? he said that
you need to take it for ever as it stops acids forming ulcers.

I am now five weeks post-op. In the hospital I was given Axid (the capsule
had to broke apart). I was sent home with a prescripition for Axid to take
twice a day for the first two weeks. After I finished the Axid I was told
by the doctor to take a Zantac (I put the pill in water to reduce to a
powder)once a day for the rest of my life to reduce acid which could lead
to uclers. I hope everything goes well with you.
