Question:
How long do you have to wait to have sex after surgery?
Is there a specific time frame or do you just wait until you feel up to it.. Any answers greatly appreciated... I am asking this question for my fiance...he just bought it up to me,so I told him I would ask you guys... — Ang B. (posted on March 18, 2001)

Angie, I would say that you should listen to your body and wait until you
feel well enough. Everyone is different. Of course, you won't want any
weight on your stomach/incision area, but I'm sure you can work that out. I
was too tired the first week or two, and felt more comfortable waiting
until my stitches were out. Also, I just felt totally unattractive until I
was able to shower properly and fix my hair and such. You'll know when the
time is right.

When I had my 2 week check up (I had open RNY - distal) I asked my doctor
about this. He said that I was doing fine and could resume relations with
my husband any time I felt like it. He also said (after apologizing
profusely and assuring me he wasn't trying to be offensive, which I knew he
wasn't) that if I was uncomfortable with my husband's weight on my tummy
that it might be more comfortable if I was on top for the first few times
(blush). We waited until about 4 weeks and just took things slow and
gentle and had no difficulties at all. Good Luck to you both!!

Angie I agree to listen to your body.My husband and I were together 1 week
after I had lap rny. My doc put no restrictions on sex or driving. Hope
this helps..

Be very careful with sex after surgery, I waited only about two weeks and
everything was fine, but then we ran into a complication a month later. I
found out I was pregnant with our fifth child. This is a blessing but it's
going to be a tough road for Mom and baby.;-)
