Question:
Will it get any better??

I am three weeks post op(gastric bypass). I was only ten days out of surgery when I started to feel good but in the last week I have started wishing I did'nt have the surgery. I've been getting sick to my stomach everytime I try to eat and if I don't eat I get sick too. I feel weak alot, and lonely because I don't have food to lean on for comfort. Is this silly? When will I start feeling like a normal person? I hate the way I feel!    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 17, 2001)

It WILL get better! You are probably going through a very common postop depression. This is a good time to learn new techniques to comfort yourself since you are unable to turn to food. I tried candles, baths, and my favorite- FLANNEL! Baby yourself and take it one day at a time. You WILL get through this!! GOOD LUCK!

Hello! I know exactly what you mean, I was feeling the same way then DING! I remembered something about the "hibernation syndrome", visit this website and about halfway down the page you'll see it : http://www.sabariatric.com/keys_to_success1.htm It helped me to understand the weakness/sad feelings and why I was being so grouchy to my loving family...I made myself go into the "hunter" mode and slowly but surely it's working, plus you know I've heard it said it takes more than 8 weeks for the anesthesia to work it's way out of our systems (even if they put you out and DON'T do surgery you still have that long recovery period). My best to you~

I could have written this question myself. I had RNY on Jan 19, and the first two weeks were horrible. I was in tears, wondering why I had this surgery. I thought I made a horrible mistake. Now, it is four weeks past, and I'm feeling better every day. I am down 27 pounds and am getting my strength back. I am still weak, and am still having a problem getting in my protein, vitamins, food, and water. I won't be going back to work for another week, so I'm hoping to get my strength back by then. You're feeling exactly what many of us felt right after surgery. You're not alone!

I am almost five months out from my WLS surgery and YESTERDAY was the FIRST time I truly was glad I'd had the surgery. I've gone from a size 26 to a size 18, lost 92 pounds, but I missed food SO MUCH. So don't despair -- It WILL get better. Best of all, YOU will feel so much better. It's not day by day -- I had some rotten weeks -- but hang in there and see if you don't feel a difference by your fifth month. It took me this long but my husband was delighted after the first week -- Everyone is unique. Hope this helps! God bless you!

I totally can understand you! I am one year post op,starting weight 288 now 158. The first six months I kept wishing I had'nt had surgery because I was sick to my stomach constantly and was very weak. Other people, including my Mom who had the same surgery were bouncing right back to their normal life. I was sad not to have the food to comfort me anymore,It was my only joy in life. Now I love life because I can actually live it! I can also eat whatever I want and in normal size portions so I never feel deprived. Your body is healing and it will take time,It was a major surgery. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.
