Question:
Does anyone else's back hurt after being up a few hours?
I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op and after I am up and about for a few hours, my back begins to hurt. The pain goes away after I lay down for a while. Is this normal? — Judy G. (posted on January 14, 2001)

I am 24 days post op so right about the same as you and yes I do experience
back pain during the day. Some days it bothers me more than others and it
also depends on what I'm doing, ie : sitting, standing, walking etc. I
would believe it's because of the way we are protecting our stomach muscles
and also the surgery itself. I know that when I got onto the OR table they
put a device under my back that arched it quite a bit. I feel that my pain
is normal aches but if you aren't sure I'd call the surgeon and see what
they think. I hope you get some relief soon! Good luck and congrats :-)

Don't forget that your stomach muscles help you to stand erect. When your
stomach muscles have been cut into, as they were in your surgery, they are
weakened and unable to help your back do the job of keeping you erect, so
your back muscles have to do all of the work by themselves.
