Question:
Flu Shots. Are they recommended?
I am a little over 6 months post op and have been pretty healthy so far but was wondering if a flu shot is recommended for the season. I didn't know how soon our immune systems are functioning fully after the surgery - please let me know. Thanks. — blank first name B. (posted on November 30, 2000)

Trish, I am having surgery on Monday and my pcp suggested I have the flu
shot which I did about two weeks ago. I think it would be a good idea,
certainly wouldn't hurt. I would think it would be good for anyone who's
had a major surgery in the past year.

I'm glad you addressed this issue. I have a pcp appointment today and need
to get mine. I asked my surgeon about this when I was discharged from the
hospital. He advised me that it was ok to receive my vaccine. However, you
may want to call your surgeon and get his opinion. Janice

Trish, I don't know if they are recommended or not , but I too am 6 months
out and will definitely be getting one. I work in a Pharmacy so I am
subjected to more germs , virus's and diseases than most people. The first
stop for sick people after their doctors office is to see me , to get their
antibiotics , decongestants , whatever. I think I remember someone else , I
think it was kathy S saying her doctor told her she had to get the flu and
pneumonia shot. I don't know if it was a general recommendation , or
specific to her. If you are undecided , call your doctor for their
opinion. We finally got the vaccine available to us and are having a flu
clinic monday. Should be a lot of fun ( NOT!)take care, Love

I asked my Dr. just prior to surgery(10-2) if it was ok to have a flu shot
on
10-13. He said it was fine, go ahead and get it.

I took it and had no problems. And no flu!
