Question:
This is not a question, rather a comment.
I am 14 months post op (and down 113 pounds-YEAH). Recently I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands. I am only 44 years old and the doctors have told me that I am too young to have developed this so early. They have told me that my body is now processing EVERYTHING too fast and that I am not absorbing all of my vitamins. I have been taking One-A-Days twice a day, my potassium twice a day and been getting B-12 shots once a week. However, my doctors do not feel as though I am absorbing enough calcium now, so they have me also taking 2000 mg of calcium a day in pill form in addition to any milk, cheese, or other calcium rich foods that I can eat. I just thought this bit of information might come in handy for someone out there who might be noticing soreness in their fingers. I now have 4 fingers (both baby and ring fingers) that are crooked. And I wish I would have been told about the calcium a year ago, I might have been able to prevent this. Good Luck to all of you!!! Linda F. We also do not absorb vit D after RNY which is a major obstacle to
absorbing calcium. Be sure the calcium you are taking is CITRATE. I took
carbonate with D all these years and was recently diagnosed with
osteporosis. I knew citrate was "supposed to be better", but
didn't realize how MUCH better until it is too late for me. I also was
daignosed with osteoarthritis a few years ago (45? 46?) but my
rheumatologist insists that it is genetic and indeed, my dad has it badly.
We really cannot absorb much calcium at all from the food sources, since
you need stomach acid to digest it. We don't have any to speak of. And we
don't absorb D from food, either. That needs to be supplemented in dry
form.
