Question:
How long after WLS can you do chores like using an upright vacuum, mopping floors,?

It has been just over 2 mo since my wls. I hesitate to use my heavy upright vacuum or do anything very strenuous that will pull in the area of my incision. When I do something that is the least bit "pulling" in that area, I pay for it. I usually spend the next day or two w/ a very uncomfortable feeling somewhere around an area of my incision. 2 nights ago, I had to sleep w/ a small pillow up against an area of my incision so it wouldn't hurt. I'd done something earlier that day that apparently pulled at the muscles near the incision. It is pretty much ok, now. But gee, does everyone have to be that careful post op 2 months? Should I try using my upright vacuum now? What chores are generally done at this time post op? I need to say this, I have had problems physically post op and it has kept me from doing many of the physical things that others do at this time in their recovery so now I guess I am playing "catch up." This strain on my incision area when I do things a little strenuous does worry me though cause I don't want to end up w/ a hernia. I don't think there is any sign of a hernia at this point, though....just uncomfortable pressure, kinda painful feelings for a day or 2 after doing something that places some pressure on the incision area. Anyone else experience this?    — kathy S. (posted on September 24, 2000)

Hi Kathy: I did the same thing you are doing, I was very concerned about developing a hernia. I took 9 weeks off work (I'm an RN) and took things really easy when I went back, but still developed a very large incisional hernia. I had that repaired at 7 months post-op, and even now, at 14 months post-RNY and 7 months post-hernia repair, I still have to be careful. I think if we build those muscles back gradually, it'll be ok....everyone is different, though, and that's important to remember. Have you discussed this with your surgeon?

i waited for the full 6 weeks and had my family help me out. I still have a little trouble in those areas now so i take it slow. It took me almost 30 mins to change linen the other day on one bed. Check with your surgeon, listen to your body too. Trina
